Defending Dell

Why the Dell bashing? Dell is not a bad company by any means. It is great for people who don't feel like spending $3000 for a laptop, unless you buy an XPS. Seriously though, Dell is marketed towards people who could care less about having an Alienhead or a Ferrari symbol on their lappy. And Dell offers a huge line of laptops for every possible user. The 700m for light notebooks, the XPS for hardcore gamers, the 9200 for widescreen bliss, the 1000 for people who need a laptop but can't afford much, the 600m for a nice light lappy with a non-integrated card, the D810 for people who HAVE to have the latest and "almost" greatest. Yes I'll admitt Dell does overcharge for their Ram, but for people who want a laptop and want a good discount they can get it. Dell has discount services through several places. A 700m built the SAME as the Alienware Sentia can cost quite a bit less. Dell's tech support is pretty much as much of a flip-flopper as John Kerry. Somedays they're excellent and somedays they suck. I've never had to call Dell for my desktop but I have had to call them for my Axim (Pocket PC). The screen was F'ed up. So I recieved a replace THE NEXT DAY, not to mention the X30 only cost about $300 while comparable HP units cost $50-150 more! My Dell Pocket DJ gives me 5 GBs of space, 1 more than the iPod Mini and the same amount as the Zen Micro, but it cost $199, $50 less than both of the competitors. What I'm trying to say is don't be so harsh on Dell because their tech support speak with an accent and they don't have cool notebook chasis's.

MX, you should know by now that different companies address different markets.

Dell markets to people who want a nice computer while still keeping some money in the bank.

A lot of people like little alien heads on their computers, though. It's the same market that likes race cars on their bedsheets, and dinosaurs on their lunchboxes

Well yeah, I just don't see NEARLY as much AW bashing from Dell owners though(just an example with AW; AW owners please don't steal my Ram!).

MX, there's no reason to bash AW owners. They have it hard enough already. How would you like it if you paid a few grand for a machine that weighed 12 lbs, got hot as a skillet, couldn't run for more than a few minutes on battery, and then somebody bashed you for the little alien head on your lunchbox, I mean laptop? You'd feel very bad, wouldn't you? Be nice to them!

I'm just saying that Dell owners get alot more $hit from people here than anywhere else. The AW people have their antagonist to, but not nearly as many as Dell.

Dell isn't a bad product but then again- Dell does sell some crappy units and their financing is even worse.

I knock Dell for being a shitty product because it really is.

My $2200 Sager Notebook is better than any $2200 dell notebook in my opinion

what do they make that is "crappy" yeah they make inexpensive lappys for $700, but what can you expect for $700?

and list the specs on your sager and I'll built a comparable Dell.

Edit: I see your notebook specs, I'll get right on it

Insipiron 9200

17" UXGA Display
Intel Pentium M 755 2.0 GHz/ 400 MHz FSB
1 GB DDR Ram
100 GB Harddrive
128 MB ATI Radeon 9700
All this with a three year warranty

For $1,909.25 before tax
$2,066.78 after tax

This is configuring it from Dell with the Ram that is overprice, and the system which I could of added the 2.1 GHz Pentium-M and tied with your price (which is just a bad idea imo, 100 MHz is not work an additional $200)

If you support ethical business standards and anti-corruption efforts you better stay far away from the likes of Dell

Dell is the Al Capone of the computer business I think, offering people deals that they can't refuse (or Intel will break their legs).

Well hey, if I can get the same computer from Dell for $500 less than alienware. I'm doing it!!! But it is too bad Dell doesn't carry AMD. Didn't they use to?
No, Dell never carried anything but Intel products. The proper company name should be Intel Retail Division, Inc.

We're all computer enthusiasts. We should all step back, take a deep breath and celebrate that fact once in a while...there's a lot of hate on these forums that is without merit and is doing nothing but crapping the bed for everyone involved.

I am one of the ones with "a dinosaur lunchbox" but also have the sense to own a i5100 for the wife and a 2001fp on my desktop AW b/c of their excellent quality vs pricepoint (aka Value).

Much love to everyone in Notebookforums land...let's keep it real and clean ok?

my exact point from above...what does this offer to anyone? Just plain old negativity spawned from some deep seeded hate of...a PC company?

Thanks Craig, I'm just trying to I'm just trying to help balance out some of this "Dell Sucks" stuff. Reading some of these posts reminds me of the "good" ole' days.

Nintendo 64 vs Playstation, haha I remember a message forum where everyother post was "N64 sux PSX roolz!"

It's a constant battle in both the Dell and AW boards. What can we do but try to make people appreciate what it is they have, not what they don't have?

There's room for all of us, regardless of brand loyalty, to live, learn and grow this forum into a wealth of knowledge for all to prosper from.

Dells are pretty nice machines; for not a whole a lot, they offer fairly good reliability, good functionality, and superb customer service. I have never regretted owning a Dell.

But the one thing negative I can say about Dell machines is that they are SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. Both because of the junk software that they throw into the package, and more importantly, they simply do not use the top performing parts. Even their specifically designed gaming machines fall behind A64 FX machines by 15-20%.

Their appeal is for people who care more about realiability and everyday applications, but their performance is nothing to write home about. I just can't help snicker a little when people boast of how great and top end their XPS or Inspiron 9100/9200 is, even the Gateway 7422, which costs less than 2/3 of its price, with a BB sale, can outperform it in many applications. (No offence MichealX, it's not directed at your comment) And my home built A64 machine with less thatn 1000 budget can trounce the Dimension XPS on every front. Dell computers, even the most expensive ones, are little better than middling in performance (except maybe the Itanium workstations, which you and I won't be able to afford sans a lottery win).

So, Dell is what it is, Slow, cheap, with mass consumer appeal, but definitely far from a main rig for an enthusiast. And they do a good job filling their market niche, and we shouldn't expect them to do more OR less than that.
