Haha, that sucks! Whackamac is a true American Hero though.

FWIW: If the byte size of the hacked BIOS isn't the same as the original BIOS, you can almost guarantee a flash failure and toasted GPU.

Why would the GPU be fried? It sounds like it would be an internal locking method so that the GPU wouldn't get fried. I highly doubt the size of a BIOS will set off a GPU to burn.

in ways this makes sence, in others it does not. but if this is true then you should see some "space filler" code at the end of a short bios so it takes up the same amount of space as a previous version. has anyone seen anything that would be comparable to "space filler" code? (thought i saw some in the form of a lot of zeros in a previous post in another topic)

whack: in your sig you say your waiting for a copper heat mod... in the mean time you ever think of getting a laptop cooler to keep the temps down until (or even after) you get the stuff to do the copper heat mod? just wondering, i think a heat mod+lap cooler would be an awsome combo

Not literally toasted but...hosed.
I think that its not really fried, but some changed coding and such that cant be changed....... hosed
ahhahahahh
oyye poor whack...me thinks this is futile. i think ati made sure that we wont be able to open all the pipes
post #30 of 40
i am certian that they can be opened! and whac, dont worry, we will pay for all the cards you need to get this done...
hmm lets see whack has burned 2 cards and i am assuming the prices of the cards each are around 300 dollars a pop. So thats 600 already. Let us be practical about it...the way things keep going at least another 5 cards are gonna be hosed...so if that holds true this shall bring the total amount spent up to 2100 dollars...or suppose 2k...nice whole number. lets see...how many people in this forum own a 9800 or are going to own a 9800 in the near future? How many are buying the next gen XPS with the x800 mobility in it already? I iam thinking that there are around 15-20 xps users in this forum. So thats a 100 bux a pop from each person. I am just trying to be pragmatic because a lot of us if we come to think about it...will prob not want to spend a 100 bux to unlock 4 pipes. I think that a lot of people won't go for it. I know i would but I do not know the mindset of everyone else. So I think before we progress and stuff, and to be fair to eveyrone who is working on this project and not taking a free ride like me...who does not want to fry their card, we should really evaluate the situation and make educated guesses as to the probability of success in this remarkable endeavor. Sorry dont mean to be a party crasher but just thinking out loud. Any ideas?
yeh, i think you're math excludes the new card variable and the fact that whac has not paid for any of the new cards as of date. The new card variable is: 100 dollars would be a heck of a lot cheaper than a new computer or a new video card that can keep up with the new pce e cards. Considering the XPS and 9100 are still up to date, and bad ass, 100 dollars would be money well spent in my opinion and probly in most owners opinions. You're not a party pooper, just somone that doesn't think of all the variables to the given equation...

Also! Whac, if Dell wants you to pay for the card, send it to me, I will say it's mine and send you the new one. We could do this for years..........
Hmmm... I smell ransom. May be it would be cheaper for dell to release an official 12 pipe bios than keep sending us new cards
post #34 of 40
I think the problem is that none of us really know what we are doing. There is just too many variables here. With the x800 Pro vivo to XT mod you are simple flashing to a new legit bios, not trying to piece together your own. We need someone who has done some of this type of bios editting before to help. Otherwise we are in the dark. Have we compared a x800 pro to x800 XT bios to check for the code the enables 16 pipes?

Problem is there isn't that may people with m9800 cards and that is why we aren't getting a lot of help. I'd hate to see this die when chances are most of us have a perfectly good 12 pipe vid card.
right on the money bdork! we need to find somone that has done this exact same thing recently, pass the hat and kick it to him....
I wonder if it would be possble to put the x800 chip on these boards? any ideas?
wardo i do not understand what u mean when u say new card variable. but my estimates were very conservative. mind you prob more 9800s are gonna be burned. and lets throw in the added possibility of 9800 not being available on the market anymore. i am not trying to belittle anyones effort but trying to think of ways this whole thing can be completely botched...thats all.

yes i've examined the x800 pro and 16 pipe bios. specifically, the 12p x800 pro vivo bios and a modded 16p x800 pro vivo bios. this latter bios was made for cards that couldn't support the xt clock speeds, but had 16 viable pipes. the differences were minimal. i think i documented my findings in a previous post somewhere.

i picked up a freeware version of IDA Pro. It's a pretty comprehensive dissassembling tool. unfortunately i have no idea how to use all its features. also it doesn't format the bios in a very legible form either. same hex stuff, but i just got the program.

i'm fixing to give up on this too.

Well, it was a nice thought. :-P I am sure we can find someone interested to help us!
