Sager NP9860 GeForce Go 6800 GDDR3 vs. ATI Radeon X800 - Page 6

Voodoo PC has an option for a 6800 Go Ultra as well as the 6800 Go. They claim that the Ultra is faster than the ATI 800. My guess is that they are calling the DDR3 6800 an "Ultra", but I don't know. I could not see any benchmarks to support their claim. As I side note I used to be quite taken with Voodoo. I am interested in a DTR and for the money, Sager is they way to go. Why pay $1200 more for the exact same lappy with paint? Back to the point; is there an "Ultra" 6800 Go that is faster than the ATI? Or is this more voodoo witchcraft?

I called a sales rep at Voodoo to follow up on this. They claim that the nVidia card is "hands down faster". He could not refer me to any benches though and said that this is still in the hands of R&D. So the mystery continues? Adam, any follow up thoughts on your benchmarking?

Welcome to the Voodoo PC Live Chat. We will be right with you. Thank you for your patience.
You are now chatting with 'Voodoo Rep'
Voodoo Rep: Hello there, what can I help you with regarding our systems?
jigga: how are you, i have 1 question
jigga: what is the difference between the 6800go ultra and the regular card?
Voodoo Rep: the ultra card is faster
jigga: besides the price difference
Voodoo Rep: other than that it is the same
jigga: do you have any specs?
jigga: is this the new ddr3 card?
Voodoo Rep: what specs are you looking for? www.nvidia.com would have all the relevant specs on that card
Voodoo Rep: it is a stock ultra card
jigga: so you guys dont tweak the card?
jigga: cool
jigga: So there are 2 new cards then?
jigga: Agddr3 model and a ultrad gddr3 model?
Voodoo Rep: the gddr is gddr3 in the utra
Voodoo Rep: ultra

My email and response by Voodoo:

Hi,
I see that you are recommending the 6800 Go Ultra over the ATI 800. A sales rep at VooDoo said on the phone that it is "hands down faster" than the ATI. Are there any benches to confirm this? PC Torque tested it and found the opposite. I want to order soon, but want the best card. Thanks.

We've tested the thermal performance and gaming performance, and there's no question that the GF Go is a better card. I have no idea who Torque is, but we do full gaming testing on all of our systems.

16 pipe version?

I was reading the March issue of CGW, which just came today, in which they had some gaming laptop reviews. The benchmarks they have were pretty low, so despite the fact that they say they were testing laptops w/ GDDR3 RAM (GeForce Go 6800), I think they were testing GDDR2 versions.

Example was 55 FPS in Doom 3.

But anyway, the article said a 16 pipe version of the GeForce Go 6800 was upcoming. Anyone else hear this?

I ordered my system with the nVidia Geforce 6800 DDR3 from Hypersonic. I went with the nVidia because I don't like to overclock and in the review the nvidia was ahead of the ATI when not overclocked.....i mean... i'll let coolbits adjust it to detemine the optimal setting and thats it. Plus it has SM 3.0 which ATI doesn't. Anandtech.com recently reviewd the nvidia dvd decoder and showed that with it, it's video is superior to ati. not to mention that nvidia software/drivers are light years ahead of ati.

God I can't wait to order mine .. Def getting Nvidia, only thing that sux is that our ship is getting underway and won't be back for a full 2 weeks... which is on the 28th.. and I won't have the money till the 14th.. so I'm wondering since I live in CA is it still possible if I ordered it on the 14th that I'd receive it by 27th latest ? I'd love to have this beast out at sea with me

Underclocked???

...The ATI x800 comes stock clocked core 400, memory 700. The NVIDIA 6800 with GDDR3 comes stock clocked @ 330/1000 Below you will see the benchmarks stock vs the overclocked settings 454/818 for ATI and 380/1440 for the 6800. ....

nvidia claims on there website here a 400/600 speed. so does clevo underclock the cards or does nvidia not know what there cards are putting out???
Ok , so if the ati has a 60 point faster gpu than the nvidia, how come during the game benchmarks the nvidia performs 3fps better? With who knows what drivers, so as soon as i get mine I will post consumer benchmarks.

But I know that it's better to have waited, than not have waited and send back in later for an exchange if the rev.2 6800 indeed turned out to be revolutionary as some have claimed/hoped for on this forum.

With that said, I thank all of you on this forum for helping me make the right choice. I will go ahead and end my 6 months of lurking on this forum in search for the right lap top and order my 9860/ATI tomorrow.

And no, I will NOT wait another (X,Y)months, years for the A64 9860. I am sure that by the time they actually announce it, Sager 9980 special edition with 16 pipe videocard and a built in coffee maker will also be announced and I'd have to cry and wait again. Please, allow me to order the current 9860/ATI and so I may finally be at peace.

But last but not least, here goes to the almighty pixel gawds: Bless me oh lord, For I have so paitently waited. Let me receive my baby without lit green pixels, cancers, and tumors etc.

Amen.

Sincerely,
Sean.
Mr csware, I realy enjoy reading your post it was the most sweet post i ever read here specialy that i almost was thinking just like you. so , thanks for smile you give it us.

Extremetech Review

Extremetech reviews the GeForce Go 6800 (GDDR3) vs. the ATI Mobility Radeon X800 here (2/22/2005 review):

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1768257,00.asp

In this review, it looks like the 6800 wins narrowly in all but one test, in which is surprisingly was MUCH faster.

I'd get either that is available, do not sit and wait for any part. I'm betting later on this year there will be powerfull 16pipe versions ready to slap in that boost performance a great deal. I peronally have the X800 in mine, and it plays EQ2 with all the textures set to max (with a lot of give and take with other settings). I use the official ATI 5.2 drivers, this is probably why I don't see the low scores they show in the review. I run HL2 in MAX resolution and detail and it's silky smooth. I ran the default resolution and max settings for the Source video test and got a nice 130fps average, so ATI is not all that bad for HL2 or any other game(especially if you overclock it like everyone else does). If your banging out for the best frames per sec, then your probably gonna end up overclocking either video you get with your machine hehe... SO just grab one with your machine and have some fun! I wish I had both, I would bench out both and play with both and give everyone the answere on which is the most pain free video card with the highest performance.

Oh! man, this is a nightmare

I have had my heart set on the X800 for that past 3 months and now that the UK launch is only 2 weeks away, I read the extremetech review and it has totally swayed my decision. By all accounts, it looks as though the 6800 Ultra has it.

I do not have loyalty with either ATI or Nvidia and have had systems with both cards over the years (However, my current PC has a Radeon 9800 pro and I am more than happy with it).

As they are both priced as a £69 upgrade (over the standard 6800 go), I really can't decide.

If anyone sees anymore comparisons on-line, please post link here. With only 2 weeks to go - I really don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong card.

Good luck to everyone else in the same position.

TIA
