7700 update: new video card - ATI X800 256MB GDDR3 Memory

Thread Starter
I just checked 7700 configurations (again) and this time Alienware now offers ATI Mobility Radeon X800 w/ 256MB of DDR 3 memory.

I need help deciding... should I upgrade to ATI X800... or keep NVIDIA GeForce Go6800 ?

I've just moved into Phase 5 about 15 minutes ago so it's not too late... though with all the latest upgrades I keep adding I may never reach Phase 6. Of course, it's just as exciting trying to get all the latest and greatest before it ships.

Thanks!

yah but why do they say its 0$ more then 6800? if its better shouldnt it cost more? has any one seen any test between these 2 cards? I know AW sends out the 6800 at about half what its clocks should be. 300/300 is what they should be . thats not considered overclocked for that card. but AW sends them out at almost half that. Id liek to see a 300/300 compared to a 800 stock speeds. if its close id go with the nvidia just for pure stabilty reasons. sure ati has improved . but nvidia has perfected.

get the x800...it is what the sager boys have had for some time now, and they have reported that they are getting very very good results from them. in fact the sager cannot even be had with the slightly older 6800.....

I'm not so sure the ATi is an upgrade. If it holds true for the desktop solutions, they are probably going to perform about the same.

Anyone here have a link to some benchmarks on both GPUs?

This is the link where sager compares the new 6800 with ddr3 and the x800... the 6800 looks pretty strong and looks to me they both perform almost the same... but ill still go with x800 coz i am biased... lol

hmmmmmmmm

seems like another split-decision like RAID or No RAID... though it would be an even more difficult decision if Nvidia's new 6800 w/ DDR3 was yet an option with Area-51m 7700

and next there's the new dual-GPU graphics cards getting released this month...

That is of course ocmparing the not yet released ddr3 6800 not the current ddr2 AW has been offering. But looking at the speeds of the ddr2 version ieven not overclocked it isonly a couple frames off form teh ddr3 x800. O/Ced it out performed it so it boils down to do you like the nvidia or ati drivers/quality better.

I have my 9860 with X800 right here and it kicks major @$$! Just look at my 3dMarks! The Nvidia ain't got nothing on me!

Wont it once the dual gpu's come out hammer the single gpu computers back into stone age...sorry for noobish question there but had to ask.

Choose NVIDIA, maybe a less slower but the driver is more stable.

The cards both give the same performance in games. Benchmarks are different than real world performance.

Get the x800, it is more efficient than the 6800go R.1

Aint listed in the UK site,

Nevermind I prefer the 6800go, but the x800 is nice and I have used both guess I am a Nvidia Fan all the way.

More efficient? judging by the extra heat it generates id say its waste more energy becuase heat is a byproduct of unused energy. A cooler running card would be more efficient. No doubt the ati is a sweet card i have owned several over teh years but I have come to see nvidia cards offer lower hassles and trouble.

I will try and make my response as amicable as possible:
ok , well you own the 6800r.1. It is hard for a lot of people to admit that something is better than what they own. The ati gets a 20% increase in performance over the card which you own. Making it more efficient htna the 6800goR1. Now the new 6800goR.2 is more efficient than your old 6800go as well. Now I will probably order on tuesday , the nvid over the ati. Simply because it supports 1 or 2 more graphical enhancements. With a vantec cooler to go along with the 9860, I dont see myself having any heat related issues.

$0

When 6800 DDR3 becomes available as an option for 7700 I wonder if it will be priced higher than X800 or $0 difference.

I have owned more ati the nvidia. So im not biased based on whats in my laptop. I will let you in on a tip about me I base my statements on facts and data and witnessed events not gut feeling hear say or intuition. a 20% boost is not making it more efficiant its drawing more watts then the 6800 and generating more heat. So actually if you get scientific the 6800 is more efficient as it hangs in close performance while making less heat and drawing less watts. The 6800 go with ddr3 is also not more efficient, it runs on a totaly different type of ram that uses different voltage and timming settings. This is what makes it perform better. to determin this all you do is look at how much performance is generated compared to how much power is drawn and by how much of that is wasted in heat. To get 100% technical you really cant compare ddr2 to ddr3 in a efficency test as i stated they use totaly differnt voltage and timmings. But no foul i know what you was trying to say.

Is all good in the hood......

Question then from a nub o_o;; sorry to intrude but was wondering if you had any links showing the diff in temp / heat vs the 2 cards ati x800 / ddr nvidia o_o;; I'm a nvidia fan myself but whichever is the better deal I"ll go for.. I"m hard into Ragnarok online,, and for the past few years I was always told that even though nvidia mainly outranks on the pc alot.. I heard that ati out ranks for mobile GPU's since it produces less heat and is more power saving / efficient.. I read a lot of places about this which was making it harder and harder for me to easily just get the nvidia.. cuz since I"m about to pay 4k for a laptop I'd wanna get the best efficient option with the least worries ^^;;; I have a basic understanding of convos here so if it gets really technical I"ll manage.. again sorry to bother but just another new buyer gathering as much info as possible, you guys are all gurus to me ;D
