Which sony? Do they have a Premium screen?
Not just in resolution, but in brightness?
(Dell's 15.4s come in 3 resolutions too)

I can go up to about $1500

Fujitsu has a really stunning screen. Go the pictures section of the Notebook General area and find the pictures of the Fujitsu 6010.

I also have to vote for the Fujitsu N6010....simply beautiful screen

Thanks.

Just did some looking around on the net..
Fujitsu n6010 Looks like very nice loaded machine.

But don't want a 17" screen and would prefer Centrino Processor.

Also Toshiba M45-s351 (Centrino M 1.73Ghz, 533fsb)

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...7&ccid=1291041

weighs only about 6.2 lbs .. less than most of the 15.4"s ..
and can be had on the net for about $1350.

2 problems..
despite 100gb HD.. it's only 4200RPM..
and battery life is crummy at app 2 hours, tho I would be using it with power cord at home most of the times

A review of slighter weaker m45-s331 and pic:

In my opinion, the Fujitsu "Crystal View" has the best display, with the Sony "XBrite" screens running just a scintilla behind... and Toshiba just a tic behind the Sony.

What is Dell's 17" 1440 x 900 WXGA+ UltraSharp™screen like? (Not their 1900 x 1200 WUXGA, as I understand that is too small a resolution)

Thanks

the toshiba is a centrino platform yet only 2hrs with a 1.7ghz dothan? WTF

"Ace view" screens are umatched. Too bad their not being made in high quantity because it is too expensive to make them.

The HP/Compaq 'Wide Bright' Screens are very nice. My local CC had a 17" HP next to a 17" Sony... the HP actually looked better (but both were excellent, and significantly better than a 17" Toshiba).

I've seen a Toshiba Qosmio at Best Buy with a fantastic screen.
All of the glossy enhanced screens are pretty good, and it wouldn't surprise me if most were made by the same OEM anyway. The best I've seen is the 17" Sony WUXGA, but if you are OK with a 15.4" WXGA, then Sony XBrite or Fujitsu ClearView would be worth a gander.

what about Sharp's 3D screen (but doesn't require u to wear any special goggles)...

I would have to say XBRITE 2 wins

Here are some pictures of the Sony FS550 (XBRITE 2) compared to the Toshiba A75 (TruBrite) and the Fujitsu N3510 (Crystal View). In my opinion the Sony has a much better display. Take a look:

Yes, pictures you made.

I can get a Toshiba and Sony and bump down the brightness using a simple function key as well.

Why is it that NO site on the Internet has an N3510 or a Toshiba that looks THAT dull?

hey ChaosBlizzard - I took some more pictures for you. I'd prefer someone else post some pictures to see if I might have a defective unit - that would seem more productive than accusing me of being a liar!

It seems like you may have a defective screen. As seen on this site,

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/03/11/2005/136/0/

The Fujitsu although not as bright, colours are definetly more vibrant and definetly not as dull as seen in your pictures. The Sony XBrite seems so bright that the colours seem washed out a little.

I totally agree...HP is a clear contender for the spot...but the Actius Sharp series that generates 3d viewing should also be opted!
