2 8600s both blew USB Ports

Thought y'all might be interested in this. We bought two identical dell 8600 laptops around Nov. 2004. On one laptop the USB ports stopped working. Dell replaced the motherboard and all is fine. Then a month later, the other laptop had the identical problem, with the identical solution.

I was wondering if other 8600 owners have had the same problem? Perhaps there is a known flaw in the motherboards made around this period? In any case I thought folks might want to be aware of it.

Are you running the laptop in areas with frequent power surges/outages? Especially in winter season, these kind of problems are usually caused by this.

No, we have never had any power problems or surges that we are aware of. 25 year old neighborhood with buried power lines. It is unlikely to me that it would be a coincidence, so I bet there must be others who have run into this.

Months later, the replacement motherboards are still working just fine.

BTW, I would never buy a laptop without getting a warranty for as long as you plan to keep the laptop!

at overclockers.com there was an article relating to this about certain devices on notebooks just turning off on USB because the option to turn it off was on.
