Wireless connection giving Black Screen..? (4750)

Thread Starter
Hello, I recently moved into a new area and left my "wired" DSL connection behind. The campus in which I live is blanketed with a wireless network so my Intel Pro 2200 BG is getting its first workout. This is presenting a serious issue for me.

When wireless is active I will intermittently get a lock-up followed very shortly thereafter (1-5 seconds) a blank, black screen. Typically after this happens I hear what I Believe is the hard drive spinning up to very high speeds. I have to shut down the PC when this happens and restart.

What I suspect may be the issue is some conflict with HTTP, as 99% of the time the lockups involve me browsing the internet (trying to find a solution to this problem). I can play hours of video games and as longa s I don't open up a browser I'm straight.

I upgraded my drivers to the latest available from intel (9.0 something) but I am still receiving this problem. Can anyone please help me out? I'd rather not have to pay for DSL again when there's a free wireless network available.

Thanks

My god! Finally, someone else with this problem!

I have been arguing back and forth with ProStar (same specs) that I am not crazy and this is their issue.

I have even sent my laptop back to them ($50 for shipping ) and gotten a brand new one and had the exact same problem from a completely clean install using both 8.x and 9.0 intel drivers.

I'm at my wit's end with this, as I just spend a huge sum and I can't even use my own laptop at home.

If you find out why this happens, PLEASE let me know admin@webbsense.com

I you would have looked for previous posts on this issue you would have noticed it's not finally someone with this problem. There's tons of posts out there that deal with the wireless 2200 freezing issues.

I doubt this solution will solve the lockups... it's a hardware compatbility issue somehow... but then again... any results?

I've had my 4750 for about two months now, and have had the same problem with my wireless that everybody else seems to be having. Specifically:

1) The notebook works fine when plugged in.
2) The notebook works fine when on batteries and wireless is disabled
3) The notebook works fine when on batteries, wireless is enabled and power scheme is set to "Always On" (but CPU speed stays maxed out, killing battery life)
4) The notebook black screens when on batteries, wireless is enabled and power scheme is set to something other than "Always On"

I wanted to be able to use wireless but not kill the battery by having the CPU running full speed all the time, so I tried everything mentioned on this forum. Needless to say, nothing worked. I have the Intel wireless card, by the way.

So I finally got around to calling Sager, and they are shipping me over a new wireless card. I get the impression that other replacement cards people have gotten have worked flawlessly, so here's hoping.

So, if you are having this problem with your wireless, do the following (or more like, "I wish somebody had just told me to do this a month and a half ago"):
-Call Sager
-They will put you through a few backflips ("did you install SP2?" "set power scheme to blah blah blah")
-When they figure out that nothing is working, they will send you a new wireless card.

They didn't hassle me or anything. I get the impression that this is happening a lot, so they know they'll likely have to send you a new card. And to my knowledge, this is the only way to resolve the wireless issue with the Intel cards.

They told me they will send me an MSI Wireless adapter to replace the one that is currently in it, so I gotta send the old one back and get the new one. Hopefully it works out better.

If you have the Gigabyte 802.11b/g adapter it's a driver issue. There's a new driver on their site ( http://www.giga-byte.com/Communicati..._GN-WIAG01.htm
which will fix the issue.

I had issues with transferring large files, streaming video from the PC on the network to the laptop and a few other minor issues until I downloaded this driver.

If your laptop has a different wireless card look ont he manufacturers website to see if they offer a driver which is newer than Pro-Star's. Chances are they do and that it will improve stability.

One ther suggestion - open the hatch which hides the wireless card and see if both antennas are connected to the wireless card. They may not be regardless of whether you have a bluetooth module. If you do have the bluetooth module try moving the antenna from one connector to the other and test to see if this resolves or helps your issue. If you don't have bluetooth then both antennas should be connected.
