hey all, i've had my inspiron 6000 for a week and a half, and since i first turned it on out of the box, the fan has run every minute. can i fix this myself, or do i have a defective fan that i need to return? thanks much.

Get fangui, see if you can turn it off.

Fangui might shut your fan(s) off, if you set the settings very low . . . but that will not resolve your issue(s). Call Dell support. Good luck.

Hmm..I was trying to determine if he had a problem.

Sorry, mich43L. I didn't mean that any bad way towards you. I just figured if his rig is brand new, why not call Dell and have it documented.

Actually, I'll continue to follow this thread. I might learn something.

I think this is normal. My 9200's fans run all the time too. Maybe they've just been designed this way since they are so quiet. If they were loud and running all the time you would know it wasnt normal.

Yeah, my 600m's fan almost always runs at lowest speed (except when freshly booted). Since you noticed it, maybe it is loud because it is running at the highest speed which is not normal under normal circumstances. If you're not gaming, it could be some process (could be spyware) hogging the processor. Like I always say, check your cpu load.

Try propping the laptop up with some books underneath to increase the airflow. If the fans slow down then I would get a laptop cooler pad.

When I ran the Dell Diagnostics on my 9200 eventually it got to a point where it would test the fan. If I remember correctly there were: off, low, med, and high (Why they would test off if the fan is on by default, I'll never know.) You might try that and see what level the fans are running at and go from there.

update

update: i called dell tech support and spent the obligatory hour with hold time factored in. techie had me restart, press F2, and scroll to power management, but the submenu he had in mind was not listed. after a few minutes hold, he came back on and told me that it is normal for the fan on my machine to run constantly. because of the "really high tech" video card, and all the "features," he explained. now, i couldn't tell you what integrated graphics is, but i know that it is virtually ridiculed here. i wonder if i didn't just get the run-around here. i really can't imagine that it's normal for the fan to run at all times, even when no programs are running or windows up.

i'll try diagnostics next.

anyone think i should just return this beast to avoid any future problems?
