Hello All!

Just wanted to know what the differences are between these types of memory:

DDR
DDR2
Dual Channel DDR
Dual Channel DDR2

What are the the advantages/disadvantages of each? What are the differences? Is there any website you can link me to so I can read more about them? Perhaps some comparison testing review sites?

there ar no dis-advantages to DDR2 (single)...lower power...faster data bandwidth. Dual channel is faster, but requires two identical dual channel chips

ddr = double data rate, sends data at both the top and bottom of clock signal, thus if it runs at 200 mhz, it actually sends data twice and could be thought of as operating at 400 mhz (but not really ;p).

dual channel ddr = doubles the bandwidth of ddr.

ddr2 = ddr with just a few optimizations to make it operate at higher frequencies. Has really poor latencies, and on p4 systems, you need it to operate at at least 667 mhz in order to be as fast as ddr at 200 mhz.

dual channel ddr2 = same as dual channel ddr.

If you get a good company...corsair/OCZ, you can get it to kick the schidt outta regular DDR...even WITHOUT OCing...with OCing....you better run for cover

So basically what I am getting at is that DDR is better than DDR2??

Does is all depend on the processor?

I was just looking at this site: http://www.alienware.com/Product_Pag...ll_gaming.aspx

And I see that some of their notebooks have DDR memory, but the more expensive ones use DDR2... shouldn't that mean it is faster? otherwise, why would they bother using DDR2?

ddr2 is relatively new compared to ddr. At 533 mhz, ddr2 is actually slower than ddr, but once the speed reaches 667mhz+, ddr2 ends up being faster. Finally, ddr2 has the potential to be clocked much higher than ddr. However, my guess would be that ddr3 will replace ddr2 within 3-4 years.

Actually. while DDR2 is not what it cliams to be, it's not that bad but the performance gain from a DDR 400 to DDR2 533 is only about 5% on average.

either your RAM is bad...or mine is turbo super RAM...I got almost 10000RAM score in PCmark 2002 (kingston single channel ddr2 533) compared to much lower (6000-7000 in a puter with regular DDR 500..PC4000)

It is pretty much common knowledge that DDR2 isn't as good as DDR unless you can get stuff in like 3-3-3 latencies and 667+. Just google for DDR2 benchmarks or look at anandtech. The benchmarks I've seen seem to show DDR2 533 similar to DDR 400 though - http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2088

DDR2 has the potential for higher clockspeeds, but you don't get something for nothing. It has the drawback of higher latency for the most part.
