ASUS S5N: First Impressions

Thread Starter
My Asus S5N arrived today from ProPortable (one day early)! No dead pixels (thanks)! Here are my initial impressions, my config, and my view on ProPortable:

Config:

1.5PM Dothan
768mb RAM
60gb/5400rpm HDD
64mb Intel Integrated Graphics (Dx9.0)
12.1" Screen
2.8lbs
0.8"

768 is currently the max RAM on this as it uses micro-dimms that max out at 512mb. When they come out with 1gb sticks one will be able to have 1.25gb as there is 256mb that I believe is immovable. I went with the 60/5400 because the 7200 seemed to knock off a significant amount of the battery life.

ProPortable

I cannot say enough good stuff about ProPortable and, in particular, Justin. They've met/exceeded all of my expectations. Some places may tell you that they check for dead pixels or do a burn-in before it leaves their store, but ProPortable really does. Laptop arrived in perfect working order and with the couple of accessories I ordered. They're also very good about getting to you about any problems that will delay your order (there was a problem with the screen on mine when they were testing it, but they resolved it quickly and actually got it to me the same day as originally promised - I was expecting it tomorrow after the problem).

Initial Impressions

1) The S5N is great looking. I had seen one in person for a few minutes before I ordered, but it really is stunning. Carbon-fiber case that is white and stainless steel colored. Gives any notebook a run for it's money in looks.

2) Weight/size. At 12.1, .8" thick and 2.8lbs, it is definetly an ultraportable. This is one of the main reasons I got it. I already toted it around in a bag to show it to my neighbor and boy did it feel like there was nothing in that bag.

3) Construction. One word: Solid. The laptop itself is typical Asus quality. Much better construction than the 3 Dell laptops I've used and better than my CL56. ( The external Cd/DVD drive is plastic, but it weighs only a few ounces and is not meant to be toted around all day - so I guess this is not a problem.)

4) Keyboard. Still getting used to the layout a little (a little different than my CL56 and the Dells I was using), but not a problem. The "important" keys on this laptop, i.e. A-Z, Shift, Enter, Space, Ctrl, Alt, are all full or close to full size (A-Z are full size). The number keys and backspace key are normal width, but "shorter." All of the less used keys are narrower, but normal height. The "F" keys are all scaled down."

The keyboard is very nice, clear keys, very little-to-no flex. The backspace key, being on the same row as the #'s is also shorter and I missed it a couple of times when I first started typing, but I seem to have gotten used to it already. Overall, no gripes with the keyboard.

6) I've already swapped out the 40/4200 for the 60/5400 HDD. ASUS provides their own XP disc (not windows branded) and system recovery disks. These made setting everything up extremely easy/painless.

7) Accesories: Game with a sleeve, brief style bag, wireless mouse (works fine - but a little small for my hands), ac adapter (tiny tiny thing), 3-cell battery all of the required CDs, some funky stickers for the touchpad, installation guys (based on the Quick Start guide I think this is marketed towards women in most parts of the world - they have 4 steps - 1. How to plug in the battery pack, 2. Plugging in the AC adapter, 3. Opening and closing the LCD, 4. Powering on/off the laptop - yeah, really tough stuff).

8) Performance - normally this thing comes with the 1.5/256RAM/40-4200HDD. With my config it zips. Installed XP very quickly, wireless works great, everything I've thrown at it in this tiny amount of time it has eaten up.

That's about all for now. If you have any questions, shoot em at me. Going to install AOE II now.

Good stuff. I'm pretty sure its 2.9lbs but honestly theres no difference. You get the once you dip below 3lbs.

I'm doing the same thing including the ram.....768mb should be plenty, although I'm buying the 1gig for max 1.25gig once it is readily available. Also I am buying 1 extra 3cell battery.

but I am a little unsure about which hard drive to buy (to replace the stock 4200/40gig)

here are my choices:
1)Hitachi Travelstar 60GB 7200rpm, 8MB cache, enhanced availability
2)Fujitsu 60GB Laptop HDD 5400rpm
3)Toshiba 60GB Laptop HDD 5400rpm

Gimme some input thx and congrats ilcacciatore

I have the Hitachi 60/5400.

Doesn't get too hot, works great. Haven't tested battery life yet.

It's listed at 2.8lbs (haven't weighed it yet). I have an extra 3cell as well... but it is the black one (for the m5n), but it was free, so I can't complain

Need feedback on anything else?

nope not really....i was sold on this notebook from when i first began my research. From then on it was pretty much finding a reason NOT to choose this one. Can't find any so.........going to wait for a price drop. If that doesnt happen soon I'll just pick it up before the summer starts. I mean around 2000 canadian total with tax and new hd and the ram aint alot.......but i have this strange feeling it will drop 100-200-300 before summer hits.

My reason for the price drop:
W5A:
12.1" WXGA
915GM Chipset
DDR2 400
802.11 a/b/g
Has 1 megapixel Camera built in
Color is pearl white like S5Ne.

If history repeats itself.....this has to drive down the price of the S5N at least 100 minimum.

Gonna go with the hitachi ...kinda scared of the 7200rpm mite opt for the 5400rpm to play it safe.

thnx

I got the 7200 on this laptop. It's not that much hotter, but I'm telling you - you can "Feel" the difference. Both as in physically difference (It's louder, you can feel it under your right palm when your typing) and in performance. So I dont know what to tell you, I'm used to the noise.

Mind you I was coming from the 4200.

Also I hear that there is already a gig of micro so dimm floating around.

My 5400 gets warm, but never past warm. It's not very noisy. I hear it when installing stuff, but the rest of the time it's just minding its own business.

I'd love to have the 7200, but wanted the compromise between battery life/heat/noise and performance so went with the 5400.

Where did you see the info on the mail-in rebate for the 9-cell?

Thanks.

ask your favorite vendor for info, they should all have it.

Got to make sure it fits too.. I've heard you have to modify the case slightly to get anything but the shorter Kingston micro-dimms in.

Awesome.

By the way, for anyone who is interested, on my config (768RAM, 60/5400 hdd), I get about 1hr45m on the 3 cell battery. I expect ~ 4.5hrs on the 9 cell when I get it.

Asus says, with the standard config, 1.5/256/40-4200hdd, that you get about 2.5hrs on 3cell.

Justin from ProPortable tells me he gets ~45mins with his 7200 rpm HDD.

So my guess is that it breaks down roughly like this (normal use):

4200 rpm hdd ~ 2.5hrs on 3cell and 7-7.5 on 9cell.
5400 rpm ~ 1.5-1.75hrs on 3cell and 4.5-5 on 9cell.
7200 rpm ~ .75-1hr on 3cell and 2-3hrs on 9cell.

Obviously it depends on how intensive your "normal use" is (i.e. for some of us it is just Word/Excel - for others it is surfing the net on wireless and listening to tunes).

But those above numbers should be a good estimate for their respective HDD speeds on the Asus S5N.

I have the S5n and I'm very satisfied with it!

3 things I have noted:
1. No built in bluetooth
2. When the fan is on it can be a bit noicy (mostly when the power cable is on) - You do not hear it in a normal office - but at home whithout any background noice it can be a bit distracting)
3. The built-in wifi network will not work on the channels 12 or 13 - (I found out as it working in almost every hotel and airport I been to - but not at home where my AP uses the channel 13 - so I had to get an adaptor for that!

The s5n would have been perfect with the above mentioned points! I hope they fix this in a future model!
