Cell Processor based Powerbook!!!!

I just finished reading an article on the new Sony/IBM/Toshiba cell processor. This thing is based on a powerpc architecture and will house 8 cores on one chip running at 4 ghz! In a nutshell all the experts agree this chip literally is a supercomputer on a chip. How pimp would it be if through the cooperation of IBM, apple incorporate the cell chip into its powermac or better yet powerbook line! I think its doable simply because the cell chip is based on the powerpc design. Hackers could then turn the PS3 into a powerhouse apple computer! I think the cell processor would make Apple a force to be reckoned with!

This topic has been discusses in many other Apple rumor forums. They all came to the conclusion that Apple will not use cell processors in their PowerMac or any of the other computer lines. Apple will not use it, there's no need for 8 processors for anyone. It'll be overpriced and really a overkill for the average person. Apple is not going to profit much from it.

what do you mean its going to be overpriced?? If sony is going to include it into the PS3 for mass production, then it the price per individual chip will surely remain competitive. Its stupid to believe that apple cant find a use for 8 processors for the average consumer. Its like you saying 3 years ago that the average consumer wouldnt need 2+ghz of processor speed, or 100+gigs of storage. As software becomes more complex the need for faster hardware will be there. I'm just saying it would make tremendous sesne for apple to go this route. At the very least it would be an interesting scenario.

a few years ago you'd say 64 bit is useless, now with the dawn of AMD64 and XP64 due to come out soon things are changing

Why don't you read that. I guess the price is no problem, but there are other things to consider.

Actually, only the "cells controller" is base on the Ibm PowerPC architecture. The rest is made from a new architecture called APU.

"Cell is comprised of several computing engines, or cores. A core based on IBM's Power architecture controls eight "synergistic" processing centers. In all, they can simultaneously carry out 10 instruction sequences, compared with two for today's Intel chips."

Sorry, don't see anything in the thread that "proves" one side of the argument or the other.

Having said that, the indications I've seen on the Cell are it will be hot and power hungry, at least for a while. Same problems the G5 has, only moreso, as far as putting it in a laptop go.
