I know i am backtracking the conversations a bit here.
I think its wacked.

I just configured a M70 and a D810.
With 2.0Ghz processors and wuxga screen the price difference with 512Mb and 40gb drive is only $246. Not bad for an upgrade from X600 to Go1400.

But any upgrades after that get increasingly steep.
Bottom line is that the M70 charges more for the exact same upgrades.
Am I missing something here?
They are encouraging people to go else where for upgrades. Or they assume that people in the market for M70 Workstations won’t bother or don't check prices.

Any idea if the gigabit lan works off of the PCI-e bus?
It should, as it's the same 57xx LOM found in some Dell desktops that utilize PCI-E LOM. The fact that it supports the Broadcom Trusted Platform Module is a good sign that it is indeed a PCI-E chip

Sure sounds like it! However, one supposedly pays extra for the Workstation Tech Support hotline etc. etc.

As an aside, the M70 has finally made it to the Downloads' section of the Dell Support site, even though it shows up as a "Latitude M70", with no selectable fields like OS, language etc.

My quote to order page (config in my signature below) also now shows a revised shipping date of 02/18/2005, so I suppose I'll get the M70 in my grubby hands early next week.

Looks like the WiFi & BlueTooth status lights are now next to the power button.

Good finds. I think the upgrade most impressive to me (besides PCI-e's potential) is the relocation of certain hardware (such as the HD not being under the palm as much) and the extra fan vents. The ones for the GPU should help quite a bit.

My Account Rep mentioned the M70 just before Christmas, and we preconfigured it last month.

He called to get the final configuration this past Saturday (02/12/2005).

He called back yesterday (02/14/2005) to give me the Service Tag, and said it was in the Production Stage, and will ship out most likely by the end of this week.

They'll bill us Q' 05, so I guess it was technically "ordered" on 02/14/2005 when I got the Service Tag (he's a good guy, lets me pick from a few easy to remember Service Tags).

Not to mention the beefy copper pipe leading to the GPU's heatsink fins.

is there anything better about the Quadro FXGo1400 compared to the 6800go?
It has better driver support and does CAD work better.
The NVidia Quadro series (and the ATi FireGL) include a series of pre-set selectable drivers that are optimised for particular CAD and professional image editing programs. The specialised drivers support many more specific commands than a gaming oriented card can do. Often the architecture of the product may be identical.
Professional graphic cards also need to be extremely precise in displaying feature position information in relation to other feature position geometry, rather than providing the fastest FPS rate etc
This article describes it quite well.

Well, I wanted the Sony FS series due to its size/weight/sheer beauty, but since it has terrible battery life and bad graphics, not to mention low resolution, I just ordered the M70. The 25% off coupon I received today might have had a little something to do with it Specs: 2.13Ghz, Intel 2915 wireless, 60 gb 7200, 1920x1200, 512 mb ram (upgrade later), DVD +/- RW.

So unless Sony pulls their act together within the next 2-3 weeks, I'll be posting a review when it arrives.

Gratz on taking the plunge.

I just ordered one as well. I'll do some benchmarks when it gets in.
can you get both the free lcd, port replicator and the 25% off?
So, this machine will play Doom 3 well I hope? Is there a way to change the video card either through bios or driver so that it would be better for games?
You might be able to get the lcd/port/25% off... I thought the lcd/port deal was gone, since I didn't see the options when I configured. But clicking on Customize M70 from the Deals/Offers page still shows the options, and that the deal expires 2/18. The configuration doesn't seem to matter, since I have a system identical to what I ordered with the free LCD/port replicator.

It won't let me use my coupon again so I guess it already processed my order, but I still want to see if the deals will all stack (I doubt they will) so I'm going to call tomorrow (they closed a few minutes ago) to see if they'll reissue my 25% off so I can try again.

Bathory: it should play Doom 3 very well. I remember a site that has modified FX drivers for various applications, can't remember the name, but you should be able to find it by searching here.

Okay, I just ordered one myself. I was considering an Acer with the x700 video card, but the M70 has me sold on the card that comes with this machine. I really didn't want a DTR that has short battery life, but I did want a machine that would be close and that will play games well. I have had good luck with Dell in the past, but I am also concerned with their customer support. Ha! I said I wouldn't buy another Dell and here I am getting another. Oh well, I just couldn't pass up this deal.

I will be ordering an m70 in about a week. I will be ordering the m70 with a WUXGA. I am a Catia Designer but will do some gaming. What screen did you decide to go with? WUXGA or WSXGA?

is the 25% off coupon available to anybody, or just a select few? I might be in your debt if you were to divulge where you got it from?

Yes. One stick will run in single channel mode, and two sticks of matched memory will run in dual channel mode.
