Can Integrated graphics do anything?

Ok, so in looking at notebook options once more, I've noticed that ultra-portables and other light notebooks very often have integrated graphics. Now I know that these 'suck', as people so frequently put it, but I don't really know how much they suck.
The only game I play with any sort of frequency if NeverwinterNights. Is that something that integrated graphics would be able to handle? In particular, I was looking at the Asus M3, since it seems to be almost a pound lighter than the M6 (which is what I'm otherwise leaning towards).

generally speaking intergrated graphics can play older games like HItman etc...

If your game is a new one and it requires full 3D and all that then the answer is no

my laptop has integrates graphics and it can play ET fine

Does anyone have any specific experience with NeverwinterNights, though?

Integrated Graphics Extreme 2 can handle stuff like Halo @ 1024x768 and Half-Life 2 at 640x480

My sister plays Dark Age of Camelot on 64mb integrated graphics... it's similar to NWK right?

i tried to run aquamark if this means anything on my new sony fs550 laptop with the new intel graphics blah blah, and it was scoring 5fps!

The can perform pretty well actually. Intel Media Accelerator 900 is somewhat equal to ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 in performance, according to 3dmark03. My bro was able to run Warcraft III on HP Omnibook xt6050, which was bought in 2002. It had an integrated ATI graphics chip. Intel Extreme Graphics 2 is able to run DirectX 7 games pretty well, etc...

Yeah, you could use Microsoft Office with the integrated graphics heheh

When are they gonna make a list like that for the GMA 900?

workarounds... seems like their suggested workaround is that you turn down to the lowest quality graphics possible. Funny how they don't phrase it that way, of course

Thanks, though, that was exactly the sort of table I was looking for.

Blech! I have Intel EXTREME (lmao) Graphics on this P4 2.8E at work, and NWN doesn't run well. The worst part is the graphics are quite poor, my voodoo3 runs stuff better and I have it in the PCI slot. The GMA900 or whatever the new one is -tolerable- for some older stuff from what the reviews say.

LMAO, but only if you eliminate most of the pictures in the toolbar...

If you can wait for the Sonoma notebooks (whenever they actually appear in the stores) the new version of Intel's integrated graphics should at least be "decent"...meaning it can handle basic games from the past year or so, but nothing new...also ATI is coming out with an integrated graphics solution.

How would integrated graphics do with counterstrike, and CS on steam?

NWN is a graphics hog. It's worst then most FPS of it's era. I had problem running it on my Presario 2800T with MR9000. Look for something with at least 64MB of MR9600. The Acer Travelmate 3204 is probably the lightest 14" laptop (4.8lbs) that will run that game with no problem and will probably handle NWN 2.

Why can't that come with an SXGA+ screen? Is that so much to ask? Other than that it's almost exactly what I'm looking for.

But 1400x1050 do make for fairly small fonts on a 14" unless you have really good eyes. Barring that your next up will be a 6.5lb laptop with a 15" or 15.4" wide. then you can have the higher res screen.

I hear you, man. I'd buy the Acer TM3204 in a hot second if it had SXGA. I can't imagine why they thought XGA was sufficient for a 14".

FYI, the Sony S series uses 1280x800 on their 13" S series, which includes the 64 MB ATI 9700. I'm thinking this is the best (almost only) route for a very light but still graphically awesome lappy. You can pick up the S360 for $1650 after rebates on Amazon.com. I may go that route myself when my tax refund arrives.

Yeah, I run NWN on my sig laptop, and it is fine. I run at 1024x768 though (screen is 1400x1050), or 1280x800 on my Dell 20" LCD. The 9600 can't push a higher resolution in NWN at all. Its slow enough at this res.

integrated graphics is just smart enough to know you are trying to run a game....HL2 at 640x480 looks like bull crap....go for AT LEAST a 9700 (radeon) or 5700(nvidia)
