Intel Extreme Graphics 2 is able to run DirectX 7 games pretty well, etc...
Yep in a totaly synthetic easy to cheat in benchmark the i900 can more or less match a Radeon 9000, using the fact that it can "run" the DX9 tests while the Radeon 9000 can not to prop up it's score, of course if you look at REAL tests it offers more like 1/2 to 2/3rds the performance of a 64 meg Radeon 9000.

and thats the THG review which had unusualy good results for the i900, actualy compared to some of the other reviews I saw I would say suspiciously high.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2238&p=6

The X600 in that review is a good performance stand in for the MRX600, just lower the speed a little, the X300SE is a good stand in for the X300 mobility, and the X700 is very similar in clocks to the MRX700. And the Intel i900 (915G) is garbage.

Anyway I played all of the NWN games on my MR9000 64 meg laptop they ran rather well, I would say anything less than an MR9000 is probly going to do poorly.

My dad has a Latitude 600 with a SXGA+ screen, and he doesn't have problems with it. I didn't get to play around with it very much, but it seemed ok from what I saw using it.

But yes, it does seem like I pretty much have to go to a notebook that weighs around 6.5 lbs if I want to get good graphics. Unless I get a powerbook of course

And Sony notebooks are just obscenely expensive. I can't believe how much they charge for any sort of upgrade The S series looks pretty nice right up until you start adding up the price

Come one, any integrated graphics on a decent machine is like having a 8 cylinder engine but lacking the 5th gear, why bother?

The only reason to bother is that it's a lot easier to get integrated graphics notebooks that are a fair bit lighter than dedicated counterparts. It seems like you can get SXGA+ or WXGA 15" or 14" notebooks that weigh only 4 or 5 lbs as long as they have integrated graphics. It's very difficult to find something that weighs less than 6.5lbs and has a 15" screen and dedicated graphics. Or even a 14" screen and dedicated graphics (with a good resolution).

Check the Acer 3200 Series, and The IBM T42, both are under 5 lbs, the Acer offers 64 meg MR9700 graphics, and the T42 comes with MR9600 graphics in the 64 meg flavor, for the IBM T42 check newegg.com they have a nice price of about $1650, for a fairly basic unit.

Yeah, you could use Microsoft Office with the integrated graphics heheh
Hardly, Half life, Counterstrike? NO WAY. TRUST ME do not get integrated graphics it's not only game, when you have non integrated graphics, it doubles as a second processor speeding up EVERYTHING. with integration the same single processor has to handle both tasks. You to the math. 1+1=2<-Non integrated, 1-1=0<-integrated, do you want a zero DBHERTZ? DO YOU! No you don't. God I'm mad now, I wish we had the nazi equivilant of a book burning with integrated graphics. I'm going to the Blow off your steam thread. AAAAAAAAHH

I just realized there are two threads on this? Makes me want to take a crap

Getting back to the title, what else can integrated graphics do well?
- photoshop ?
- powerpoint?
- video editing and burning?
All of those things will be affected by integrated graphics (although video burning less so) since it will take away from your system RAM, which will be considerably slower than dedicated VRAM. Any grahically intensive application will be slowed down.

Sheesh, even in 2D integrated is slow. The voodoo3 in the pci slot in my work PCI is faster at 2D than the onboard Intel Extreme is. You can see it rather obviously just by dragging a window all around the screen (dual displays at work ).

Wow, I had no idea that this topic incited the sort of religious fervour that has been demonstrated.
I'm not advocating integrated graphics or anything, I was just wondering what it would actually be capable of.

The Acer 3200 is only XGA
The T42 is definitely also something I've been looking at, but I'm a little apprehensive of IBM's prices. It quickly moves above the $2k level...

Integrated Graphic Extreme 2 can handle pretty much every game pretty well before Doom III, Far Cry, MoH: PA, etc. You could play C&C Generals, Halo, MoH: AA. You just won't be able to play them in the triple framerate digits.
