ACER 8104 followup...

Yesterday, Fedex picked up my 8104 for depot service exactly on time based on my conversation with ACER support.

FYI, my 8104 is experiencing spantaneous reboots and lockups. This is probably the worse problem to have because I've gone all day without it occurring, and alternatively had it reboot after just 10 minutes of use. I thought it was thermal related because generally, it takes a few hours before the problem occurs.

Anyhow, I'll report back and let everyone know how their depot service holds up.

Might as well be bad memory stick.

Could be any of these, and I'm really anxious to see how good their support is. This is critical for business use because every day without it means lost time and dollars. I still have my Thinkpad T42 for backup and will keep it just in case something catastrophic happens. In fact, I sync between the two laptops on an almost daily basis, just to make sure I have NO down time. This is in addition to the backups to our server at work.

Why are Sonoma chipsets cheaper?

I was just curious? Why are notebooks with the new Sonoma chipsets cheaper? When looking at the specs on the 8104 compared to the 8006, it seems to me that the 8104 is far superior but much cheaper in price? I know this is a little off the subject, but does anyone have an explanation?

That's how Intel ensures world domination. They price their new components low enough to ensure widespread adoption, and then they tighten the screws on higher speed upgrades and new feature additions to the chipset.

Higher resolution screen to me is overkill. It makes things too small/unreadable. And if you start using large fonts, what was the point of getting higher res?
Slot-loading drive is a deal breaker for me. It does not accept non-standard (credit-sized) CDs which I use a lot.
So these are both not advantages but rather variations on specs.

I've seen also at least one Sonoma laptop (ASUS I think) was pictured with PCI-E slot instead of PCCard. That's again not an advantage because there are practically no PCI-E slot cards now and you cannot use some nice PCCard devices like TV tuners or Audigy 2 ZS Notebook.

As always, there are many factors affecting a personal choice of laptop

Got an email yesterday from ACER indicating that my laptop got to the depot repair location. Nice touch... at least I know it got there.
