The X-Brite screen is *exactly* the same -- no changes in resolution, optical coatings or backlight.
To the best of my knowledge the following are unchanged: CPU, display, wireless connectivity, ports, case design & materials, keyboard/touchpad, battery & power.
The ram, motherboard chipset, hard drive and video card have all been incremented. The hard drive is a non-issue because if you want to max out performance you still have to upgrade the stock drive (in the a290 OR a690) to a 7200 rpm, anyway. The other enhancements will provide some incremental performance improvements if you're a hardcore gamer or running incredibly ram intensive applications. Other than that I can't imagine you'll notice a difference. Oh, and battery life may be a bit shorter because of the video card change. (If anyone knows otherwise please correct me)
Is it worth the extra $500? Not to me, but your priorities may be different. Personally I'd use $150 to upgrade the drive to a Hitachi 7200 rpm and save the rest. Or get a Vantec USB enclosure for an extra $17 while you're at it and voila, the slow drive currently in your system becomes a kick-ass external backup.
