Compaq presario 710us blue screens

I bought this laptop for $150 at a grage sale and I consider a good purchse (even if I just sell it for spare parts). I would like to use it for school, but I keep getting blue screens for no particular reason. Random blue screens that happen soon after booting into windows - less than five minutes. If it gets past that it will run all day without problems. The plastic on the screen is cracked and sometimes moving the screen will cause it to blue screen but not always.

I thought it might have been a driver problem, so I updated all the drivers from hp's website. I also tried disabling none essential components, usb, modem, and floppy drive, but that doesn't work either. I have a couple components left to try network, sound, and that it about it.

Any suggestions for diagnosing the problem or possible fixes would be appreciated.

I've repaired quite a few of these with bad solder joints on the onboard RAM mods.. (Moving can cause, Look for bad joints)..Do you have the error codes?

The bsod had this to say about the most recent crash:

<bsod>
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

<then the standard blue screen message about what to do (not helpful)>

STOP 0x000000D1 (0xFF384C18, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF9DD7870)

atapi.sys
</bsod>

The last part atapi.sys makes me think it is a problem with the dvd drive I think I will try and run it without the drive.

As for the model the sticker on the screen says "Presario 700", but the sticker underneath the computer say "p710usd100x420vc25e" plus the specs are closer to a 710us (1ghz duron, 256mb ram sodered on the board).

Thanks for the quick reply, btw what would bad solder joints on the memory look like?
