hmm should I stay with the omega's based on 5.1 or go with the official catalyst 5.2?
the useres are reporting some errors with the omegas ( just for model 8790).
I personal think that ATI has relaesed the 5.2 quickly after the 5.1 because the 5.1 ones had some problems.
I think that you should install the new ones. by the way i tried to mod them with the program from driverheaven & all the things went perfectly . but when i started the it gave an error ( some error with number 88 character.............) that i don't know exactly the problem can you help me with these?????
I always just wait until the Omegas come out. They're typically better than the standard Cats, and the install is a lot more simple.

how do i know what ati version (4.X/5.X) i have installed? i think i have v 5.1 and doom won't play worth shit right now. does anyone have a corelation between 5.1 and doom not working?
I used the driverheaven mobilitymod tool to hack the 5.2's and they installed perfectly fine on my d470k (4750) radeon 9700. HL2 (dx) and Riddick (OGL) appear to play fine though i haven't stressed them much.

For the people asking why they released 5.2, keep in mind ati releases a new catalyst driver every month.

You find your version of catalyst by going to the advanced setting on your display properties and select the 'options' tab. If you have the catalyst control center panel then open the catalyst control center, select the 'help' tab, and from there select the 'graphics software' tab.

Will these work on the 9600 Pro card in a 8890?

You will need to update the BIOS to 1.00.10 in order to use the newer Cats or Omegas Rage.

"bios version 008.017.192.053" "

Val don't get confused with what I was telling rage.
I was referring to an issue with the 8890's BIOS and the new cats.
The BIOS version ramazz was talking about is the BIOS for the Radeon card not the computer.
For example my Radeon 9600 has a bios of 008.011.001.017
post #14 of 21
Doh! Sorry - added to the confusion. I should have read ramazz's post closer.

ramazz is talking about the driver version of the Catalyst drivers.
That is different to the BIOS of the Radeon card.
He is talking about the drivers not the BIOS.

Also be aware that there is a difference between the driver version and the packaging version. For example I am running driver version 6.14.10.6378 which are packaged as 7.93 WHQL (note these are an older non-Catalyst driver originally supplied with the 8890's - must update one of these days...)

How about I just tell you what I have and you tell me what I need or should get? :P

Went into device manager and it says my ati x800 has driver version 6.14.10.6497. Would this catalyst driver be better?

Edit: It was late I think I mixed his post up with yours on needing a new bios version.

NP val. Sorry I confused things.
*cough* still didnt tell me what if I should get this or not :P
post #18 of 21
Well this probably doesn't help but I've gotten all sorts of problems with the modded cat's on my 8887 with the radeon 9000 128 I think that if you have a 88XX then you should stick with the omegas.

Just some info for people who have the same model as mine

I that is a driver based on catalyst 4.12 (december 2004 release)

If you do decide to upgrade to catalyst 5.2 (or 5.3 if you wait a week or two) then be sure to first install drivercleaner3, boot to safe mode and uninstall your current ati driver and control panel and then use drivercleaner to remove the leftovers. You'll also need the mobility mod from driverheaven.net in order to mod the catalyst 5.2's so that they will install on your system without error.

Good luck.
