New 9860, sound sucks!

Hey guys

I was hoping I could get your input on this: the sound coming from my brand new 9860 is junk. My MP3s are all tinny and sound like crap, in Half Life 2 I get lagging due to certain sounds that play and frankly Im pissed. My roomate has an Acer laptop and the onboard sound kicks mine in the balls, we use a cable to hook up our computers to a little Bose stereo and when its hooked up to mine the music is terrible when compared to when it's hooked up to his. I've been reading the forums and I disabled the Infrared port, muted the mic, muted to CD audio, I've tried playing with the equalizer settings in the realtek utility and in Winamp. I'm considering just buying the audigy sound card because this is pissing me off. Anyone else resolve any sound problems with their Sager laptop??

Thanks,

Steve

I haven't had any real problems with my sound, but it doesn't sound as good as my HP zt3000 did when hooked up to my speakers. However it was far from crap... It sounded good but not great... I too am getting the audigy2 ZS notebook card though (must have premium sound)...

If you're not sure just download and install these http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20CODECs

Yeah, any luck??

Oh another thing I forgot to tell you is that if you're using winamp for your music you need to go into your output sound settings and set them to direct sound output or wave out this will give you the best sound.

You can try tweaking the equalizer, too. But even then, it still wasn't good enough for me. YMMV.

yea it wasnt good enough for me see i got the audigy 2 zs notebook, end of that.

Get the audigy notebook. I got it because I wasn't satisfied with the onboard sound quality just as you are. You will be pleased and will notice a significant difference.

Try opening up your HDD cover on the bottom of your notebook and snd see if there is a wire hanging down in there not connected to anything.

i noticed the same thing, my 9860 has the worst sound of any notebook i've ever owned, i have an old cheap 700 mhz dell that has A.louder and B. better sound quality than the 9860, even my old 500mhz ibook blows it away, after everyone saying the 9860 had great (for notebook) speakers and sound i'm kinda let down

Indigo

I noticed the same thing aswell (though the speakers themsevles for a laptop are pretty good) Id hook it up to a nice pair of MDR7506 headphones and it was static crap.

I recommend getting an Echo Indigo card. I got one off ebay and it sounds like silk. Kinda rare and pricey.

Yup, same crappy sound here. My Tosh 607 sounds awesome compared to the 9860. It really is a terrible noise, even for a laptop.

I've installed the last version of the driver for the realtek sound card (v1.15):

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20CODECs

Now, sound is great, no pertubations or crappy sound or stange noise. I can use my headphone without a glitches or a problem with a good level. And i've muted (for playback) line In an microphone.

Agreed. The newest Realtek driver seems to bring the speakers to life. I can actually use the laptop as a boombox. The original driver was pretty lame. Sound was tinny.

Good find, much better

Realtek is a good card, but must have good drivers to be happy with it :-)
It's not as good as a audigy but for a laptop i think it's a good solution with a goorp price/performace ratio. I'm playing Doom 3 and Far cry and don't have problem with sound. Good spatialization and energy. I didn't have receive HL² yet (today normally) but i will try it soon and give you a feedback :-)
