Craig, it has zero to do with how anyone pays for it. This is a company purchase so I couldn't really care less.
This is an inventory issue and some seem to accept it without reproach which for the life of me I don't understand. These companies don't want to warehouse product. It's not because manufacturers revise product too often it is because they don't want to carry the burden of inventory. Why should they when they have a public waiting like sheep to pay they expenses? This can't be explained away by "well they are boutique". I deal with other "boutique" products in the market place and none (repeat none) work with JIT deliver of parts. They keep a small cash and order as used to refill stock. These small companies created the term "boutique" to get us to believe these practices can be justified and are acceptable.
There is no "technical' reason why this is. It is pure dollars and cents and THAT is why I have a problem. Carry XX amount of each in case of supplier failures. Again, holding me responsible for supplier issues is bogus.
Ferrari??? Not a great analogy since no one out there makes Ferraris' or anything similar. With the exception of the lid of the book the 7700 looks just like an Sagar. Ferrari makes everything accept the rubber in their cars. They cast everything from the ground up. I am fine with that. I will pay for that up front because the parts aren't readily available in the market place. Also there is no where else to get a Ferrari. AW is buying components and putting them together. By the way the "pay up front" is for the Enzo. You can still walk into a Ferrari dealer and buy a Spider off the lot.
Holding the buyer accountable for their lack of warehousing is ridiculous. I was willing to go the month begrudgingly. Well the month is up. I paid for this system the 13th of January. It is the 11th of February and I am still in Phase 8. It hasn't even started build yet.

Trust me, they do a great job!
