Power Supply fan question

Thread Starter
I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I just got a new 5660 and have no problems with it. However last night I was reading some of the messages about having a power supply with a loud fan in it. Being curious, I picked mine up off the floor and checked it out. Mine has slots in the end of it and it appears there is a fan inside, however I have never noticed the fan coming on, ever. I have left the laptop on for many hours and I am sure if the fan was going to come on, it would have. Do you think the fan is defective? Is there any model number on the power supply that will verify what kind I have?

I did notice my power supply does get very hot and the last thing I want is for it to melt down, short out or somehow cause damage to the laptop.

Any help appreciated.

TIA,
Martin Parrott

I've had 1 case the fan was never coming on and it was so hot you could hardly hold it. If that's the case with yours, get it exchanged. Most of them you can't hear the fan, but some of them for some reason are a little louder. If it were really loud, I would suggest the customer return it for an exchange which has also happened.

I wrote the model number of mine down in another thread, it doesn't have the fan run at all (audibly at least) either, although I've heard it once when I first got this lappy. It gets hot, but no hotter than my own lappy's power supply, lol.

I kept an eye on the temp of the power supply last night and it didn't seem to get nearly as hot as before. Strange. I will keep checking it and see how it goes.

Perhaps one of the cats was sleeping on it before and that caused it to overheat! Hey, don't laugh, we have two cats and they are always surprising us with strange things they do.

Thanks,

I'm noticing that alienware and voodoo users have been having problems with their ac adapters as well (overheating, burning out...etc) Perhaps there is an inherent design flaw in these adapters although there doesn't seem to be many sager problems. Voodoo and alienware also use the 3.06 P4 so perhaps that is a contributing problem and one that maybe clevo has recognized and is part of the recent delay with their 3.06 release. Or maybe I'm just over analyzing a random occurance
