ZD8000 or Dell 9200/9300

I had placed an order for the Dell Inspiron 9200 here in Australia - my bloody order was cancelled by Dell as they have apparently run out of stock of the 9200's and the rep told me they weren't getting any more in. They have also been taken off the Dell Australia website.

I was down at an Officeworks store the other day and they had a zd8000 in stock - nice looking unit, but BIG. Admittedly it will be a desktop replacement, so that's not a huge issue. It had the following specs.
  • P4 3.2GHz
  • 512MB RAM
  • 128MB VRAM
  • XGA Screen - 1440 x 900
  • 80GB 4200RPM Hard Drive

I had ordered the Dell 9200 which had the following specs:
  • PM 2.0GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • 128MB VRAM
  • WUXGA Screen at 1900 x 1200
  • 60GB 7200RPM HArd Drive

They were about the same price over here so I'd need to upgrade the RAM and hard drive (total around US$350 for RAM and HD less what I could get to sell the existing components on ebay). I gather performance would be similar, but the PM's wireless capabilities and better battery life are making my decision tough.

I'm just in a dilemma. I need to upgrade pretty quickly - in the next couple of weeks max. Not sure whether to go for the zd8000 or wait to see what Dell offer as a replacement for the 9200 - god knows when that will be).

Any advice appreciated.

I went ahead and got the ZD8002 today. It has a 3.4GHz P4 processor, 1GB RAM, 256MB VRAM - overall a great machine except for the 4200RPM Hard Drive.

If you order one online...you could get a nice machine for probably cheaper then at the store. The machine in my sig when I ordered it costed 1930 without rebate. So you might want to look into that!

B/c of the screen issues, I went w/ the zd8000. The screen is gorgeous when placed next to my friend's 9200. The great thing about the zd8000 is that it runs cool if you're a cool room. So cool, that I can't hear the fans. On a side note, the battery life seriously blows. But if you're not going anywhere, rock on w/ the zd8000.

I managed to get cost proce through the store - it worked out to be about $AU$700 cheaper than retail and I got an additional 2 years warranty for free. No way I could have got a deal like that online.

Just a question - will the 7200RPM Hard Drive be noticeably quicker then the 4200?

Yes 7200 will be faster by far thn the 4200.

Thanks - trying to find someone in Melbourne that keeps them in stock!

What is the max battery time on ZD8000?

1.75 hours by personal experience. If you turn off wireless and screen, you can squeeze out 2.5 hours.

I am also looking at both the zd8000 and the Dell 9200 here in the US. I love the HP zd8000 SXGA+ screen but prefer the Centrino on the Dell 9200. I don't think I can tolerate the UXGA screen as I will be doing a lot of reading on this machine. For my work in Photoshop 7.0 I don't want to go with the XGA screen with the Dell 9200.

Another condiseration is that I am seriously interested in the XP Media Center Edition 2005 which is an option on the HP zd8000. Has anyone played with this operating system and set up the extenders and PCI 2 channel tuners ect? I like this option so that if at my parents house, where I will set up an extender, my family will be able to view my computer work while hanging around in the living room rather than crowding around my laptop. Any thoughts?

I was at a CompUSA and ran FUTUREMARK 03 on a ZD8000. When I saw the score was 3100, I told the guy he could keep it. Still.....nice lookin' unit just not enough gun for me.
