i9300 With TVTuner and Windows Media Edition - Page 2

My computer is my only expense as I have almost no income. A TV tuner would be awesome for me to record shows so I could burn them on a DVD and watch them on my regular TV and $39 DVD player. Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 sounds awesome because I would convince my family to buy an extender for their big plasma screen TV while they sit comfortably in their living room and I show them my graphics work and family pictures. I am hoping that my work will motivate them to get into computers and the Media Center Edition might be the best solution. I live separately from my family but it would be beneficial if we both had the same system.

So far, Toshiba makes mulit-media center laptops but they all have 17" WXGA screens which are too low of a resolution for me. I am looking into the HP zd8000 but the battery life is terrible and the P4 runs so hot, however, I love the SXGA+ screen. I like the Dell 9200, especially since a friend of mine can offer me a discount and because the centrino is great for long life. However, the UXGA screen seems like a poor choice for me since I read 6+ hours a day online and surfing would be lousy with tiny tiny pictures. If Dell offered a TV tuner, that would be great and I hope they also offer it with the XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Recording TV and watching it later really makes watching TV much more enjoyable. I currently do this with 2 old VCR's hooked up to 18 cable stations. No commercials as I zip through them. If my computer could record shows, that would be great!

Tuners work great with the i9200 (see sig), so should also work great with the next models.

The best place for advice on this subject is AVSForum:

Running the best of all worlds here.
Using Sasem for OTA HDTV, cable, and analog. Also has A/V inputs to use as a capture device. Besides basic PVR stuff, it can pause and replay live HDTV (tough to find). Connected the i9200 to a 144" DLP for SuperBowl at our local pub, and it was awesome. Of course the 17" screen works great as well.

For satellite, running Skystar2 USB, which receives DVB Sat's. Using software MyTheatre.

So yes, some of us are enjoying tuners with our 17" laptops.
I can fit either device into my laptop bag (not both at same time).

Out of the two Eurocom users I know, none of them use their integrated TV Tuner or integrated webcam.

Lol. It's always porn that motivates the innovator in us all .

I don't need a TV tuner for my notebook. I watch TV on a TV, I can still watch recorded TV on my notebook, I just copy the files over.

How do you copy files over? Does your TV have a file system?

Sorry, I guess I should clarify. I have a desktop computer that I use as a PVR. I actually never watch live TV. My point is, I don't want to use my notebook as a PVR, I move my notebook around all the time, traveling, going to work everyday, using it in the bedroom. I can't just leave it plugged into a TV cable all the time.

by the way, looks like I lost the battery time bet. How disappointing. I wonder if the x300 in the 9300 or the non-glare screens get better battery life.

Where is that thread where we were all guessing at the opening price of the 9300? I think I actually got pretty close on that, though, it will probably be even cheaper when the 9300 version comes out. Was that one of the deleted threads because of the disclosure violation?
