What made you switch? - Page 2

i was a mac owner for years during OS7-OS9. i left because i couldnt afford the mac lifestyle and have ALWAYS been jealous of the cool stuff they keep making and am dying to run OSX. but several years later im still PC only and even though mac prices are getting reasonable, i wont jump in until they stop trying to pretend white is a cool color. sure, it looks nice when you see it polished in a store but i want to use it in the real world.

(dont get mad that i dislike the white campaign. i just feel that apple would grab more customers by giving its users more options like f-f-f-freakin black!)

EDIT:
i forgot my biggest reason for not switching. one button mouse???? sure you can buy a 2 button mouse replacement, but how the heck do you buy a 2 button trackpad? why put 2 button support in the OS and not provide the hardware to use it?

Youre acting like theyre trying to combine an MP3 player and a pizza cutter. FM radios transmit sound directly into your ear. MP3 player transmit sound directly into your ear. Put them both together in the exact same sized package (Zen Micro/iRiver H10) and you got more features for less money. And with the Zen Micro you can RECORD fm radio on the hard drive thats built into your mp3 player? MP3 didnt kill FM Radio so it all goes hand in hand. And while i prefer the ipod 1000x more, you have to admit that sometimes less isnt always more.

And I don't care for the one button mouse either, however, Apple has a reason for sticking with the one button. The average computer user never really needs to use the right mouse button because they can accomplish everything they need with the left. Anything they can't do with the left, which will be rare, they can easily accomplish by control clicking—for the average user this is never done enough to become a nuisance.
That rationalization has always annoyed me. Why do people keep acting like mac users are dopes who would flip out because their mouse appears to be cracked in half. Apple is at a 2% market share because they are catering to the wrong people. How are you going to expand your market share by aiming at existing mac owners and grandmas? They have to stop thinking their potential customers are morons.

And just because macs are mommy friendly doesnt mean its the machine most people will buy their mom. Why would a non-mac son buy his mom a Mac? Fine its easier (so they say) but when something goes wrong then her means of support will be the 95% of the world that dont use macs.

Anyway, im not talking down on the mac. I absolutely love macs and am months away from finally trying to make the switch back. But silly logic like this just shows me why mac market share has fallen so low. its sad, but theyre doing it to themselves. maybe that HP exec will give them a better perspective.

what is up with that HP + Apple merge now?
No idea. Possibly hp providing better marketing.

But that doesn't make too much sense as iPod popularity is skyrocketting. I did get an iPod and i love. It's a beautiful machine.

As for the switch...

It hasn't happened yet. I want to switch now but I'm waiting till this summer when I head off to college. This way I will have the best for a little while. Maybe they will have the dual G4s or G5 lappies.

about the switch....i've just gotten tired of windows and all the security and viruses and the same ole interface. i'm ready to try something new and a cooler looking OS. i have a few friends that have apples and they just seem to be better built than most laptops made by pc makers.

um, abf, so...what about the last umpteen times of "wtf r u posting about other OSes, when the question was about ppl switching to macs?"-did u miss?

fair answer

If the question is "What made you switch?" (to Apple)...

Why can't the answer be, "The superior operating system."? It doesn't seem off topic to me.

I know this answer can be debated, but it is a valid reason for switching, and in fact, the reason most people do.

(granted, I don't see the logic of how Linux creeped into this thread)

Yup, simple question. Here's the answer . . .

17" G4 PowerBook, 14" G4 iBook, Power Mac G4 . . . mine
15" G4 powerBook . . . wife's

They look and perform great! Well, perhaps not the iBook . . . LOL

It's a very subjective answer. We have 2 Dell desktops, as well. I would never say one paltform is superior over the other. That would be too assuming and totally ludicrous.

Relax and enjoy what you have . . . Peace!

I'll agree to that point.

We have an Apple PowerBook G4 (my Dad) and a G5 Dual 2.0GHz with the DLL 6800GT card in it. Both are WONDERFUL, and I love the G5 processors (not as much as AMD, but very close!) The only PC in our house that beats the G5 is my new one with dual 6800GTs(Ultras really) and an AMD 3500+. GO APPLE!

honestly, if apple would get their sh!t together w/ better gaming support in the OS, it might be nighty-night for gates and co.
I was going to switch, but I'm staying with Amiga.

What more can they do beyond integrating OpenGL at the graphics layer of the OS?

The problem is that so many game developers are tied into the closed Microsoft developed DirectX technology that porting the games to the Mac becomes a pain. Apple does quite a bit to spur gaming development, but it still hasn't been enough to get programmers away from DirectX.

i dunno, but i'm hoping core video will be a step in the right direction. opengl needs some updating as it is. also, if nvidia GPUs handle opengl better than ATI cards do, why doesn't apple use nvidia across their products? or doesn't the whole driver efficiency issue come to bare in OS X for nvidia?
Well, they heavily are marketing the DLL 6800 GT/Ultra in their G5s, which is a good sign. I know that our G5 SCREAMS with that card in it! They need the Cell processor deal to go through, more game support, and nVidia to do an Apple SLi, and then Microsoft and Intel would be cooked! (aka Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, etc etc)

I dont even think thats a war worth fighting. "No games on Mac" is the classic anti-mac slogan. But in a day where we have 3 major console systems and 2 major portable consoles then MOST (not all) will have no problem getting a gaming fix elsewhere. Even with industry cooperation, I just dont see apple ever being a "game system".
Yeah, you are probably right (and it is sad).... Well, we can still hope right?
problem is. may people prefer fps gaming with a keyboard and a mouse, myself included.

and drak is totally right it's the tie in with d3d.. if they'd get their asses back on opengl we'd all be better off.

Love to own a sexy 17" powerbook . But I just can not justify $$$$$ and virtually not configurable compare to window based laptop. I ended up with Dell 9200 and configure the machine suitable for my need .
