satellite 5005-s504 - flakey usb....

all,
i have usb problems... most of the time none of the 3 usb ports work. Occasionally, they work, but most of the time they are dead. I have uninstalled/re-installed the hubs and devices in the device manager many times. I have done an f1 reboot to reload the bios. Apparently, on the s504 access to the bios is not possible.... i have uninstalled svc pack 2. I am reluctant to take it in to a repair place because the machine is only worth about $500. I am aware of the 5005 class action lawsuit (and have applied).
The last time the usb worked consistently for about 3 days....i had the machine powered off for almost a week. Could this be heat related??? i downloaded/installed a new bios a couple of years ago to fix the overheat power off problem that esxisted in the first couple of months in the life of the 5005. I power off the machine overnight all the time, but now that doesn't even work..
I am very impressed with the posts here, and am hopeful someone has some suggestions
BTW mt cd/rw has not been working for a while. I followed one of the threads and will try and install a refurb.

tia,

what have you been plugging into the USB's? I thought my USB's were flaky but it turned out I had a broken mouse.

Are all your MS updates done. There is a patch that I found which seems to address your problem. Take a look. Pan down on the page about 7 links or so to Win XP - A fix to resolve the following issue. Personally, I would do all my updates first, reboot then if not addressed, try this:
WinXP- A fix to resolve

saugen,
thanks for the tip; i have been to this site before.... I downlaoded the patch you mentioned but it would not apply, since i was at svc pack 2. FYI i also downlaoded the usb exerciser they have and it reports all devices are working correctly........
i appreciate your interest...

Mike;
I found this statement on another site. Do you have the Toshiba HWsetup installed on your machine:
The final method discussed is for the following Toshiba models:

Satellite 5005-S504, 5005-S507, 5005-S508, 5105-S607, 5105-S608, 5105-S501, 5105-S701, 5105-S502, 5105-S702, 5105-S901, 5205-S503, 5205-S703, 5205-S504, and 5205-S704

These are "legacy-free" models, and they do not incorporate a BIOS Setup program in the motherboard ROM. The only way to run BIOS Setup is using a Windows-based BIOS Setup utility called HWSetup. The HWSetup utility comes preinstalled on these Toshiba models, and it is also contained in the Toshiba Utilities package for these models, which can be downloaded from the Toshiba support Web site. To run HWSetup, open the Control Panel and double-click the HWSetup program. HWSetup provides a graphical front end for modifying BIOS settings. Note that if you change any settings, you may be required to restart the system.

Something real drastic would be to format your HD and try a clean install of WinXP. It may address possible corrupted drivers/files. It's really a labour intensive and bothersome suggestion though. lol

usb problems too

I have the same computer and I had what sounds like a similar problem with the usb. I had it fixed (still under 3yr warranty which has paid off 10 times over with this pos) which required replacing a daughterboard that also contains the display adaptor. I am told this part is worth $75. To make a long story short, 4 trips to the shop and 3 months later, I have now had nearly everything replaced (hd, mb, 2 daughterboards, cd-rw) and the computer works again, for the moment. Maybe you should just get a serial mouse for 10 bucks and wait for the settlement check.
