Toshiba M45s331 ac power problem

Thread Starter
I bought the computer 3 days ago and had nothing but problems with the ac cord. When the computer has been on for a while and I unplug the ac cord and run it on the batteries and go to recharge it and plug the ac cord back in the computer freezes. This happens all the time Unplug cord, wait a few minutes and plug it back in the computer freezes. Returned it for a second unit and same thing right out of the box, Charge up the laptop, turn it on and let it get warm, unplugh ac let it run on the batteries and plug the ac cord back in, the computer freezes. Some times you have to remove the cord once or twice to get it to start happing. But I can get it to happen all the time. Called tech support and the could not figure it out. They wanted me to take it to a service center so I decided to return it . The tech guy at CC. Could could also get it to happen, said it was probley a driver problem. Tried it on their display module and same thing, their computer freezes. Has any one eles had this problem. Bad batch of computers? Nice laptop, but what the use if you cant plug it back in with out it freezing.

M45-s331

Thats awful.
I also just bought myself an M45-S331 and have to say "It is Really Great!"
Before I was using a Vaio FX-215 and this Toshiba just puts it to shame in many ways.
If you can just get another of the same model that might resolve the problem, I dont know... Where did you buy it ?
It just sounds like an odd sort of problem to begin with.

Same problem here. I just exchanged my sony FS550 for the M45-S331 because I wasn't very happy with the Sony. This M45 is great, but I'm experiencing the same problem with the AC power cord.

Also, each time I start the maching Norton gives an error and says "norton does not support the Repair function, please uninstall and reinstall". This appears infront of the windows install for the updates that were downloaded. Once I hit OK the install stops. I can't uninstall Norton, because I have no way of reinstalling it.

Anyone have some suggestions? If the freezing continues this thing is going back.

I've heard of other people with this same problem. I don't have an M45, but I was looking in to getting one. I hope this problem gets resolved soon, because it looks like an awesome laptop!

toshiba m45

I'm having the exact same problem with the ac plug in/locking up problem...I thought it was a lemon computer and exchanged it for another one...but that second one did the same thing... Now I'm thinking it might be a glitch in all the computers. Should I just return it and get my money back? or send it to toshiba to fix it? Does anyone else NOT have this problem?! I got this computer from Office depot. - Dave

This is a damn shame, because it's such a nice computer. I called Toshiba's tech support line and the representative had me reinstall the Toshiba Power Saver program with the recovery CD. He said it was a problem with some windows updates. After reinstalling it the problem went away for one time while I was on the phone. After I hang up, bam, it freezes. I figure the next one will do the same if I exchange it and being that the store is 2 hours away I don't want to make another trip there. I've been there three times total after returning the Sony FS550 I had in the first place.

If anyone has figured out a solution please let us all know. I have about 10 days to return it. I've tried uninstalling the Power Saver completely, but it was no different.

Thanks,
G

yeah i'm with you on that one...i really like this notebook. I'm going to update all the drivers from the toshiba support website and see how it goes. It's not a big problem that we can't work around and i think eventually they'll find a fix for this glitch...in the meantime, just turn off your wi-fi, then plug in the ac adapter. - Dave

Has turning the Wi-fi off before plugging in the AC power cord helped? If so, then it's not too big of a deal. Also, it seems Toshiba's page for the driver isn't available right now? I've been looking at the Product Support under Computer Systems and Digital Products. It just says UND. If you could supply a link to the site, that would be great.

I remember seeing a subject on the support page mentioning the Freeze Ups on the A70 and A75 models. Hopefully they will have something for this model. Thanks for the help.

gman, yeah i haven't had any problems when the wi-fi is turned off... so i just went to the toshiba support site and downloaded/installed all their updates. The lockup problem is still there. Only thing that seems to help is uninstalling my norton antivirus. When i uninstalled my norton antivirus last night, i was able to unplug/plug the AC adapter three times before a lockup would occur. Knowing that norton antivirus takes up a lot of memory and slows down your computer, and also noticing that the lockups tend to occur when my system is busy, i'm starting to think this is a memory problem. So maybe a memory upgrade would help. I don't know...just guessing. Because this system has an integrate video card, it takes up a big chunk of the physical memory anyway and then you have all these extra stuff that toshiba preinstall in your computer that also takes up memory...so I'm going to try to uninstall all that preinstall crap and see if it helps. i'll let you know....if you still want to update the drivers...here's the web site link

Hmm I'm just wondering, is it only the U.S model (the M45) that has this problem because it has an integrated graphics card instead of a dedicated one (like the Canadian model has)? I've heard of some people with this laptop that have no problems at all.....hmm...

Problem solved?

Guys I think I've found out how to fix that problem. I disabled the wireless network card's default power management and set the bar to medium (there's low and full power). I can't get the laptop to freeze anymore, no matter how many times i plug it in. Good luck...pm if you have any questions. - Dave

I did the same thing about 2 weeks ago. I bought an FS550 and used it for 10 days. I returned it because the battery life was pretty bad and even though the screen was super bright I found the colors to be cold and washed out compared to the M45.

I think you'll like the Toshiba very much. I get between 2.5 and 3 hrs on the battery if I'm doing simple tasks (internet, etc).

Could you describe the process of adjusting the card's power management as I'm fairly new to the laptops power option? Like where to go to adjust the power properties (control panel or something). Thanks.

Well I got he laptop and so far I like it better then the FS550. I tried the plug in of the AC pwer and nothing happened the first time but I did it again last night and it froze up but I haven't messed with it to much. I will keep it since I leave for Iraq on thursday and I have a 2 year anything happen to it warranty from CC. So if there is no fix for it in a year I can exchange it and get a better one. But if you guys figure out how to fix it let me know.

how to fix the ac problem

g-man, go to control panel, click on systems, then click on hardware, then go into device manager. find the network adapters category and your wireless card in it. Go into your wireless card's properties setting by double clicking it. In "property" window, find power management, disable the default management, and set it to whatever you want..i have it on highest performance. good luck. - Dave
