Hi,
I have a strange behaviour developing on my laptop (DELL inspiron 5100 with combo cd and dvd burner drive).
Since I like to experiment with downloading software,I have adopted a system to preserve my laptops base setup by ghosting the c drive and restoring the setup at regular intervals. After each restore I will make any changes to the base setup which I like and reghost. This method has been quite successfull for me, Until now!
The computer refuses to boot from the CD when I instert the Norton Ghost (9.0 or 2003) disc. It also refuses to boot from the original windows XP CD that Dell supplied. I tried to reading CD's and it worked, but DVD did not.
I thought at this point that the CD drive is absolutely stuffed now!
But.... I tested further, Seems that via Real player, I can still burn music CD for my car sterio, furthermore... I found an old Linux boot CD and tried to boot the computer from it, and it worked!! I tried the norton ghost cd immediately afterwards and it also worked! But that was a one off, I am now back into the case where it will not work again.
I checked out the dell website for BIOS updates and found a more recent one, BUT, for this update you must boot with the update burnt on a CD!!!! I tried this off course and the reaction is the same as with the norton ghost and the windows boot CDs.

Can anyone help me, becuase DELL support has proven to be close to useless with my problem.
