help with system recovery...

hi,

im helping my friend clean up her computer and i attempted to use the compaq quick restore system recovery cds. one by one i put them in until all 4 cds were completely loaded. but the thing is that it say in the backround only 74% completed or something. AND it was still asking for the next cd, yet there is none. other than those 4 cds that were given to me by her from her brother are the windows xp, and the application recovery cd.

since i could not find the 'next cd' it was looking for i shut it down. after rebooting it a message came up saying that there was no operating system. so i install windows xp now along with the application recovery cd.

my question is WHY after loading all four cds did it want more. am i really missing something here. should i try to do it again, hoping that it wont ask for more cds.

hope you guys can help. thanks

ps. its an OLD presario 900

I have presario 910 and it has the system restore disks.
1: 8 CDs System restore disk:
It takes ages to use alll these 8 CDs to restore. It also includes lots of softwares which I do not use (some were as big as 400 MB). The result, I get very slow computer.

2: It also came with Windows XP CD (1 French, 1 English). I tried this CD and have been using this ever since. You might have to go to HP/Compaq support and look for the drivers there. I got all the drivers for my Presario 910US from there.

3: I now use Windows XP Pro. There are drivers for this too on the support page.

I still have the 8 CDs, just yesterday I was asking my girlfriend if she needed thos or I am going to put them in the garbage. She wanted me to keep them in case I need them. I am using them as paperweight.

My advice, just use a windows cd and download all the drivers from compaq website. The computer boots much faster.

Just to make sure you have all the restore cds, look for the label:
1 of 4
2 of 4
3 of 4
4 of 4

if it says

1 of 8
2 of 8 ........... then you have some pieces missing.

If it doesn't work after retries, I recommend doing a standalone XP install and downloading the necessary drivers from here:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

just make sure you specify the right make and model of your computer:

My selecetion goes like this:

Presario Notebook-------> Presario 900 series notebook -------> Presario 910 US (although I bought it in Canada, I got a US model)........then you have to choose the drivers for your operating system WInXP/WinXP Home/WinXP Pro.

Or just go to this link and select your Notebook:

I even flashed my bios from there, so it is safe.

Good Luck.
