Sony VGN-FS550 Observations

Hi:

I'm sure some of you have been looking at this sexy new notebook from Sony. I bought two of them yesterday, one for my daughter and I, so here's the scoop:

Best news is that Sony USA has finally given up on that stupid partitioning "feature" and now ships one contiguous 80GB disk, so no need to reformat, yay!

The bad news is battery life sucks. I'm barely getting 1.5 hours with the standard battery, on either machine, while Sony's spec says 2.5+ hours! I've already chatted with Sony Support and, of course, they recommended changing my setting from "VAIO Optimized" to "Max Battery" -- which is no help at all. I guess Intel's latest "Sonoma" chipset is performing exactly as reported -- it's slightly faster, but sucks more battery power.

The other bad thing is that Sony somehow decided to increase the size of its power brick, which is nearly twice as large as my Z1WAMP brick, that's *not* progress.

Of course, the XBRITE screen is to die for. In fact, it makes my less-than-one-year-old Z1 look so dim it feels I'm typing through a dirty aquarium. I guess I can turn down that incredible brightness to extend battery life but who really wants to do that, once spoiled?

But I love the price. This puppy set me back just $1450 after rebates at Best Buy, but you better hurry, the offer ends today!!! That's a spectacular price for new technology, particularly one with the Sony brand.

I agree with what another poster said about wanting the 1680x1050 screen, but if you read Sony Japan's site carefully, you'll notice that that model, the VGN-FS70B, offers WORSE battery life, which is probably why Sony is holding off on releasing that model stateside.

PROS: incredible screen; roomy 80GB HD (NOT PARTITIONED); latest Sonoma technology; DVD burner; well-built, solid feel; super-sexy design; cheaply priced, especially for a Sony.

CONS: poor battery life; power brick should be smaller.

Partitioned HD

I bought mine at BB as well . However, my HD def was partitioned. I made the back ups and then used Partition Magic to reformat the HD. I am curious how your computer isn't partitioned from the factory.

Curious, Sony bills this as a DVD+and - drive. It only will write to DVD-R's though.

That's weird! Neither Sony I bought was partitioned. Maybe they slipped through the cracks somehow...

BTW, does your battery meter lack "time left" too? I only see "percent left," which makes me wonder if Sony disabled this feature after discovering how weak battery performance was.
Yes it is currently only showing percent left. Battery life gets better if you tone down the screen and use their power settings.

OK, this puppy is going back. Here's a message I sent to Sony Support:

"While I appreciate your battery tips, this notebook is supposed to work straight out of the box. Since you're merely tapdancing around the issue, please report this service-contact result to product management:

'The customer returned his FS-550 to Best Buy and warned that we should get ready for a lot of complaints.'

BTW, it's quite clear that the new Sony "FS" series are lacking battery-wise, because this is my first Sony (of five) that has no "Time Left" feature when running on battery power."

That's the problem with brand new notebooks - you may end up being a paying beta tester for an unfinished product.

Yes, and the fact that neither of my notebooks had partitions makes me wonder.

Hi guys,
I was about to order mine from compusa for $1449.99 (After $250 mailin rebate). But after learning abt the bat. performance, i'm not so sure.

Also, is it possible that sony might improve the bat. for this model down the line? In that case I wouldnt mind waiting ... cause i really like this one

I don't know if this can be improved materially without tossing out Intel's new CPU! Now, I have to tell you that I returned this notebook mainly because of the battery performance, but also because I need to see more screen real estate, not less than my Z1, so maybe the 1680x1050 would be a better choice.

But the Japanese Sony site specs are worrisome, since that suggests it performs even worse than the others in terms of battery use.

I also noticed that Dell's D810 spec sheet, which resembles the Sony, provides no battery performance data whatsoever. That unit is better spec'd than the Sony, including PCI Express and ATI Mobility RADEON X600, but like another poster said, "I don't like the looks."

The battery performance with the new Sonoma laptops is both surprising and disappointing. The fact that it is far below Intel's suggested 5% drop is rather difficult to swallow, since there is no reason that a brand new laptop with all mobile components should have less than half the battery life of my old Compaq 2720US.

Well, as you know Best Buy has a 15% restocking fee for notebook computers, and they have a major hurdle to overcome: a bunch of dweeb "techies" who go over the computer for an extended period of time to make sure you're telling the truth.

Bottomline, my friend and I went for a pizza and came back to the San Francisco store an hour and a half later, and though he was skeptical at first, he clearly agreed with my assessment that battery life sucked.

And as we all know, battery life gets progressively worse as a it ages. When I told the tech to monitor the battery meter and watch it go down AS YOU LOOK, he couldn't believe it either, but that's what happened.

Like I said before, it could be just a lemon I had to play with for the weekend, but what are the odds of buying two and finding both have battery lives that sucked like the table below shows:

Battery Timing Test:

Sony FS550 5 Min. 15 Min. 30 Min.
Notebook #1 92% 83% 70%
Notebook #2 94% 84% 73%
This battery life nonsense has caused me to order a loaded Dell M70. So unless Sony releases some FS model worth buying, I'll sacrifice the pretty case and slightly smaller size...

I just picked my FS550 last night at Best Buy. I just started it for the first time this morning. Some similarities that I noticed with michael's 2 notebooks. My HD is 80 gigs NOT partitioned and the battery life is horrible. If the screen is on anything but the brightest setting it gives off a loud buzzing sound. Loud enough that I wouldn't want to work on it!

It's definitely a nice looking machine and the screen on the highest brightness is one of the nicest ones out there. That's the reason I went for it over the Toshiba and HP. Both their high gloss finish screens weren't as bright at the Sony's. I'm going to play around for a few more days and see if it grows on me. Before the 14 day return period I may be back to Best Buy to bring up some issues. I just don't know if I can go with a screen that's not this beautiful.

Any more input on the DVD burner? Is it just DVD+? And if so, what are the dissadvantages? One reason I got it was for the dual layer burner, but if I'm not going to be able to do certain things because of the lacking DVD- then it's going back.

Thanks
G

Never heard the buzzing sound on mine, and I'm very sensitive to any noise. Glad you confirmed that Sony is unpartitioning some HDs, though!
Except if they're unpartitioning those HD's without including restore disks, that is kind of a problem.

One of the disadvantages to DVD+ is that they hold less data that DVD- disks do. While they may be more compatible (I've yet to have a problem with either one in any drive, but that's what I have been told), the fact that they hold less data has been a problem on several occasions.

I'm sorry guys, I am confused about the "partitioned" HD as some of you stated.
I just got my FS550 last night. Didn't play with it alot yet, but my HD comes in at 69.5 TOTAL, and 63.3 AVAILABLE (I think). Does it sound normal?
Anyway, can someone explain to me what a "partition" HD is? Does it mean it has 2 separate HD instead of 1?
Thanks
That would be the size of the drive after the hidden partition. Sony places a hidden restore partition on its drives for you to make restore disks from. It effectively takes between 4-6 GB of your hard disk for all of the restore files. After you make your restore disk you could delete it if you wish using software such as partition magic.

So far the notebook has been pretty good, but there's a number of little things that bother me. Again, the battery life isn't that great. The internal wireless card doesn't seem to work as good as my brother's Toshiba A75. I wish there was an alternate volume control wheel. Using Fn + f3 or f4 gets a little bothersome if you listen to a lot of music. There are two shortcut buttons, but the only sound option is muting. All the ports (USB, firewire) are on the side and not in the back which causes some crowding. The screen is very bright and I feel as though it may be overkill 75% of the time. Some of these things may seem stupid, but if I'm paying for a nice case, light weight, and convenience I want something user friendly.

I'm definitely considering taking it back and getting something else. I feel that for the same amount of money I could have more of a machine. Something with a 17" screen (Toshiba's TruBrite screens seem pretty good), a better video card, and a more user friendly layout.

To list a few pros of the FS550: light weight, nice keyboard, screen is incredibly bright (although almost too bright for some), and the dual layer DVD burner, which I think is still pretty rare for laptops.

Anyway, just thought I'd share some more after having time to use it for a little bit. If anyone has any suggestions, certain brand or model or tips for this one, let me know.

Thanks.

So you got the buzzing sound as well e? i got it on two fs550 notebooks i tried!! it was so annoying, i could hear it even with music on.

The speakers sucked huge, even at full they weren't really loud

THE BATTERY LIFE wow both comptuers sucked huge lucky if i could get 1.5 hours!
i think the screen is great on the fs550 not at bright though, at bright it would hurt my eyes, maybe i am being picky here but it's true.

i took book back and i ordered myself a acer 8104.!!

Did you purchase your FS550 at Best Buy? If so did they give you any problems when you took it back? I have a feeling they are going to try to slap a 15% restocking fee on it, but if I'm purchasing another notebook I don't think they'll charge me.

I also feel like I'm being picky, but I'm going to be using it for a couple years almost everyday. With that in mind I want to be happy with my purchase.
