Best gateway for editing digital video and exporting to DVD

Hey guys i just did my first mini dv capture and editing in adobe premeire on my gateway m505x 1.4 ghz centrino.

The editing and rendering was fine... but it took nearly 5 hrs to export the files to DVD. Is it the program? my laptop?

Or is there a faster way to tranfer mini dv files to DVD? has anyone purchased those Mini DVD camcorders from hitachi or sony?

Thanks

Did 5 hours include the burn time and how long was the file you were encoding? Encoding is no "quick" process, but 5 hours seems a bit excessive. I assume you have a 4200RPM hard drive. If that's the case, that is part of the speed problem. DV work is very HDD intensive.

Also what programs where you using.. I have found some are worse than others.. When I take footage from my MiniDV cam to make on a dvd I use
WinDV(Transfer)>VirtualDub(Edit, filter, frameserve)>TMPGEnc encoder(encode)>TMPGEnc DVD Author(author and burn). Best part is that the first three programs are free and the DVD Author is around $70.

I have not had a chance to make a dvd on the new 7422 that I puchased on Thursday. When doing it before I was on my self made desktop.

I capture the video ( 60 mins to transfer data in realtime speed i suppose)from my canon zr 85 to adobe premeire pro 7.0 i do some basic transitions etc and render the work area. And Yes i have the slow stock 4200 RPM hd : (

Then i export it to DVD and says its "transcoding" takes around 5-7 hrs but includes burning to DVD. My dvd is only 2 x on my m505... is there a faster way to transfer mini dv files to DVD format? or is the mini DVD camcorders the way to go?

Thanks guys!

Is that 5-7 hours for one 1 hour tape?

1 hr to capture the video (as it plays it captures the video) but when i export it to DVD it takes around 5-7 hrs and the DVD is burned and ready to play after this is all done... is it the centrino 1.4ghz haha do i need a faster p4 HT or athlon etc?

If you are only encoding 1hr worth of video, 5-7 hours is very extreme for your hardware. The 1.4GHz Pentium-m should be encoding a lot faster than that, even with a 4200RPM hard drive.

am i doing something wrong? what other software do u recommend so i can transfer my mini dv tapes to DVD? thanks

I don't think it is the software. I used Premier for a short period of time and never had any speed issues with it. The only reason I quit using it was it's inabilities to create menu layouts. I am not sure what it could be.

try roxio media creator 7.0, it works great for me. As for the title of the post, which gateway?? I'd go with the 7422, 8x dvd burner, and 1 gig of ram! Best deal out there!

i think u use director or adobe encore for creating menus... is there a better software to transfer mini dv files to dvd?

it just takes long to export the files to DVD... the "transcoding" takes 5-7 hrs... (dvd is burned during this process too)

For-all-in-one with user friendliness, you can't hardly beat Pinnacle Studio.

Here's an Idea: I bought an external encoder that automatically converts the video to DVD compatible Mpeg. It's usb, and has the encoder built in (Real time and uses no CPU).
I find this to greatly benefit me in using my Toshiba with the P M 1.5 celeron for video transfers. The brand encoder I use is ADS, and I highly recommend it if you want to transfer a video source.
P.S. I've used almost every vid program out there. I prefer Ulead and Premiere- both are for advanced users for editing.

5-7hours on a old p-m seems reasonable for an hour of dv footage (uncompressed 500lines)

HD is a big factor, but CPU is main problem. also the actual mpeg2 encoder can affect speed, but mainly its gonna be that cpu.

encoding at 4-5 frames a sec ....ouch

are u capturing at YUV2? make sure its NOT rgb24, thatll decrease the file size. and overall encoding time. so in the end. CPU speed is gonna be the main factor

Yeah the video and audio settings are high quality andnot compressed. I dont even think my centrino 1.4ghz is running at 1400 mhz... maybe 700hz. I will check next time. I am capturing the video with premeire... Whats transcoding? making the dv files to DVD files?
yes, its convertering uncompressed DV into mpeg2, also known as encoding. heh yea it might be a good idea to make sure youre running at full speed

For encodind it would be a good ideea to buy an m675XL. Using 5400rpm, 1gb ram and a PENTIUM 4 processor should beat up the 7440gx, because p4s are better at encoding.

how do u make the processor run at 1400mhz with the ac plugged in? i thought the processor would change autmatically depending on applications i use.. can i change this in the bios? also what 1gb ram will fit on the gateway m505x? any sugguestions?
