OK I have no idea what is going on, with this damn machine. I have reformatted, my computer after I got back from Iraq. Everything runs awesome, EXCEPT my dvd player. I can play games from it just fine, it loads the opening moives just great, I can burn stuff on it, but when ever I put a DVD in, the sound and movie stutters, when I record a video from my web cam, the sound is good but the video stutters. I have just downloaded the current Omaga 2.6.5a drivers... still the same thing. Does anyone have an idea on how I can fix this. Also I am still learning about computers so please go easy on me

Oh yeah before I forget, I am using the same program that came with this computer interVideo WinDVD 4. I really don't want to go out and buy another program, cause this had worked good before.

Download DVD Shrink. After seleting the DVD, it will analyze the DVD and stop.

On the bottom left of the screen there is a "preview box", select the play (right arrow button) and full screen (F-11). Now you have a DVD viewer. If this stutters and stammers, It indicates that you have a driver problem. If everything works OK, then it would point to the player software and/or drivers for that software.

Ok G, I have installed it and the same thing happens. So now I guess it is a driver problem. I have tried to install the latest drivers, like I had said before. Do you think that it would be best just to do a reformat? Or do you have any other tricks up your sleeve

What BIOS are you using? There was a problem with video stuttering when using newer drivers WITHOUT the newest BIOS (version 10).

I am using the same bios that came with the computer. I am not sure of the version. I am a little nervous about updating the bios, cause I have heard allot of horror stories. If someone would give me some advice, I would like to give it a try. I am not sure what motherboard I have if that matters. All I know is that I have an 8890. .. Do you think that if I had updated my BIOS it would help? I am willing to try it before I reformat...

Thanks

Hi rage, glad to hear you are back from Iraq.

Ok bios updates are a painless exercise.
It does sound like a BIOS version issue particularly as you have done a complete OS reinstall.

To find out what BIOS you have power down the system for a few seconds then on power up get ready to press the PAUSE/BREAK key just above the backspace key.
You will see the POST (power on self test) screen flash before your eyes just after power up. Hit the PAUSE/BREAK key and it will freeze the display.

You will get a display like this:
PHP Code:
Phoenix First Bios ... Copyright ... All rights reserved... BIOS Revision: 1.00.03-T7 (or what ever yours is) KBC/EC Firmware: 1.00.02 (or what ever yours is) CPU = Intel .... ...
Let me know what version you have as I have a repository of most versions.

The most current is 1.00.10-T1 and it seems to fix the DVD stutter problem.

My current bios is V122 1.00.10 (no alphanumeric suffix... ?)

I did update the bios at some point to get rid of that beep and switch the Fn+Ctrl keys, but I can't remember when and haven't really been paying attention to updates.

What does the newest BIOS fix? Or what reasons are there to upgrade?

The new BIOS (new as in they cameout sometime last year) fixed a hardware issue that was preventing us from using newer video drivers without skipping and stuttering in the playback due to a flaw in the hardware acceleration options.

Ahh, that makes sense - I tried some of the cat drivers a while back, but never really found one that was stable, so when I reformatted, I just stuck with the stock drivers. Been using 'em ever since, but when I eventually get around to buying HL2, I imagine I'll need to use newer drivers and probably even overclock.

Ok so now, where and what to do to upgrade my BIOS. Like I had said before I am still learning about this so please go easy on me.

Hi Rage,
Sent you a PM.

The BIOS flashing process is very simple.
The zip I will send you will decompress to a folder called 8890 BIOS 1.00.10-T1

Have a read of the autoexec.bat file.
It explains the various options for flashing.

You will need to create a bootable floppy disk, then copy all the files IN the folder (but not the folder) across to the floppy ie. all files should appear at the top directory of the floppy.

Make sure you are on AC power. Make sure you are on AC power. Make sure you are on AC power.
Got that!

Once you have that, reboot the 8890 and the floppy should start a MS-DOS command prompt.
If your current BIOS boot settings do no look for the floppy first you will need to reset the computer, enter the BIOS settings (Function key F2 during power up) then make sure the floppy is first item in the boot order. (I can explain this in more detail if the floppy does not boot first).

You may also care to have a look at this thread which also has info on the BIOS update procedures.
