Asus m6ne - Too much Swapping

Thread Starter
I need an advice in a performance issue

I've got a new asus m6858Ne,
Intel Pm735 (1.7 Ghz, Dothan)
512 Ram (2x256 stick)
60Gb 5400 rpm
Dvd-Rw DL
Mobility Radeon 9700 w 64 MB Ram
Xp Prof Sp2

The problem is, when i try to play games, (Vampire, Hl2, Cs-S, Cs 1.6, Riso of Nations ..) i experience lockups in a 5-6 seconds period... The sound loops and the picture hangs for a while, (2-3 seconds) and the hdd indicator blinks all the time.. is this a ram issue, or something is wrong? This problem is really annoying, because 512 ram should be enough! How can i fix this problem?
I think that the owerall performance of this nb is very good, only this swapping is a bit confusing!

ps: sorry for my english!

Please Help!

With your video card and low ram i think you just dont have enought machine for Hl2, Rise of nations does the same thing to me every now and then the other games i dont have so I cant say but does it do anything else werid when your not playing games?

First try to root out all of the spy/adware that are on your computer, a number of programs do that, one of them is here: www.spybot.com

Then try to go into add/remove programs and delete programs that are unnecessary for you to run the computer or the applications that you need.

Then, you might need to go into windows:
Start --> Run -->
msconfig
Then click the Startup tab, and turn off some unneeded utilities when windows starts, and see how much that helps.

You can try editing registries, but that's kind of risky unless you are at least somewhat of an OS expert.

The last resort, or course, is simply to add more RAM, and try to improve the hardware when software optimization has been pushed to limits.

I experience swapping in normal apps too, but not as many as while playing... I don't really know, if this is because of the 512 ram, because in my desktop i have 1 gig. So i can't compare... But when i had only 512 i think that i had less hdd swapping... The funny is that, all tha games run perfectly.. High fps, nice graphics, only thoose ***** lockups. I think, that if the gpu would be slow, than i would get low fps... So IMHO the problem is something else!

I think you will be able to disabel the Asus Mail, I don't know what "PRONoMgr" and "Steam" are, so find that out and decide. You also might be able to disable msmsgs on some machines, although on others they will cause instability of the OS kernel, it depends.

In any case, before you do anything, set a system restore point, and revert back if something goes wrong. Insurance is always good.

Run msconfig.

start--->run--->msconfig--->services tab--->check hide all microsoft services.
Then tell us what you have left in that list.

The only things I have are utilities from Symantec (norton and associated services), Cisco (for VPN), CPUCool, ATI driver, Debug Manager (MS VisualStudio). Because I have already cleaned my system up when I got it from BB a month ago.

Usually just set restore point, and use your best judgement; worst comes to worst, you will have to boot into safe mode and reload and drivers and such. Very rarely does anyone have to do fresh reinstall because of messing with msconfig, in fact, I don't personally know anyone.

i run cs 1.6 on a P2 450MHz with 256mb or ram and a radeon 9000 64mb on 2x agp at a highly playable rate, so it is definatly not the hardware.

SynTPLpr
SynTPEnh -are for the touchpad, leave alone

HControl -is for the keys on top, leave alone

atiptaxx -is the ati driver or something, leave alone

ZCfgSvc -maybe the wireless zero service? can leave alone

PRONoMgr -is the intel wireless software (PROset) you can kill it if not using wireless and don't need it. wireless works even if it's off actually.

deamon -daemon tools i'm guessing (virtual drive mounting thing) can kill it, or just disable it

jusched -some scheduler(eh kill it, hahahaha!)

cli -no idea(meh, KILL muhahaha!)

msmsgs - microsoft messages? eh kill it

Steam -Half-life launcher app, etc, leave alone

Asus Chkmail -asus mail checker(do ya need it?)

Ati Catalyst System Tray - tray icon for ati stuff

One more question:

Do you know a good defrag utility, because, this inbuilt app is leaving fragmented files after the defrag... So if I look at the picture Before/After it's allmost the same!!

Thanx for everyone for the answers!

Are the two sticks of ram of the same specs? if they are different they can cause compatibilty issues with each other, just a thought.

Run it multiply times one after another and your hard drive is all ways going to be somewhat fragemented. Windows instent the best but its free so i just work with it.
