Why or why not purchase a PowerBook? - Page 2

have you noticed that HP mounts a num_pad on their 17" models?
I've noticed. It's great. *pets HP number pad* The number pad is the reason I bought this laptop, actually.

And about the iBook. I have someone in one of my classes that has a 12" iBook. He is partly responsible for me wanting to buy myself a new notebook. Desks in college can be surprisingly small, and the 12" screen is almost a neccesity when trying to fit your notebook on a desk. I don't know a whole lot about the battery life of the Powerbook, my but the guy I know with the iBook says he can get 4 or 5 hours of battery life.

My main concern is reliability and the ability to multi-task. I don't want to have to fiddle with it everyday to keep it running or keep it from not crashing. And I feel that good customer service is a must....

Thanks
If you don't do any video editing a powerbook is overkill. You should get a 14inch ibook

check this out. a little more pricey than the regular one, but what the hell. since you can't post links, search "color ware" on google. it's the first result that pops up.

Why to buy: Damn, its the ultra supersexy 15" powerbook. Nuff said. You buy, I bow, it's that simple (Oh, and OSX spanks XP in every way, but thats a whole diffrent post)

Why Not to buy.....In all honesty price. For the price of the 15"PB, you could get a fully loaded AW area 51M, Dell XPS2, or like an Acer Ferrari. The price will be the most hindering factor, but you must remember that OSX is that good!!!! (But, again, itts a whole other post)

Dont buy apple. Its the stupid ppl that keep feeding into the notion that its a fashion/cultural thing. Instead, they are wasting their money for the wrong reasons and directly feeding into this whole conspiracy.

i want an ibook but i dont know what to look for, i kind of want the cheapest one cuz im not rich but i would like at least 1GB of ram, i need to learn macosX, i have a 40GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache Samsung 2.5" laptop drive sitting around, can i throw that in and throw out the 30GB? what is the 30GB anyways? 4200? 5400? also it doesn't say on the mac website what kind of ram, is it pc2100/2700/3200/4000 etc? i really hate it when companies dont tell you what kind of components they throw it, they only list a generic number that means next to nothing.

BTW and no ibook/powerbook can touch my asus for the price, OSX does not kill XPSP2, XPSP2 has never crashed on me and has ALWAYS ran ultra smooth with no swap. only idiots that dont know how to use XP or configure it to their needs has problems.

Let me make myself very clear in what i said before that gets trashed and twisted. I said it killed XP, NOT XPS/XPS2. XP is an operating system, and XPS/XPS2 is a notebook from Dell. Okay, now that we have that cleared up, we can move on with no guilt

Hmmm?

pr5...With educational discount the cheapest iBook is 899. Adding 512 megs of RAM through Apple isn't a bad deal and will bring you up to 768, though if you want to add a gig stick buy it elsewhere. RAM for iBooks should be PC2700—they don't tell you because they want you to buy it from them.

You can add your harddrive, but you have to practically disassemble the entire computer to get it in there. It would probably be better to spend a little bit of extra money and have a bigger drive added.

solobaricsrock3: He said XPSP2, as in Windows XP Service Pack 2. He didn't mention anything about the Dell XPS and it's unfortunate naming schema.

he's talkign about windows xp sp2

and i use it daily and no it isn't as stable as os x and no it can't multiprocess properly and no it isn't as good.

sorry XPSP2 is what i wanted to say, XP WITH SERVICE PACK , yes dell has named one of their laptops the same as the acronym for windowsxp w/ sp2

Jerbead get yourself the powerbook. I'm in the same boat you are, I'm a 30 something graduate student who is also running his own business and the first thing i did after being accepted was get myself a new toy. Do you need a powerbook? Hell no but it makes your stay at school that much sweeter. Dude I'm not a mac person but those powerbooks are sweet and if thats what tickles your pickle then ignore all the retards who are telling you to go for the ibook. The ibook is for pussies who still need their parents permission to pee, so do yourself a favor and get a real computer that has enough power to brag about and the screen real-estate to make your DVDs and such worthwhile. Plus don't pander to the penniless wonders here who only look at the utility of things to justify their sacrifices. Anyway thats my take.

But I have an IBook

noesis; if you have the money, sure, get the PowerBook, but the iBooks are almost as powerful now as the PowerBooks and, unless you need the extra screen resolution or a couple of the other features, they're much cheaper. Saying that they're for pussies is an ignorant statement—you know, the kind that's generally made by actual pussies.

Wrong on both counts. I have people around me who own and use both the powerbook and the ibook and no way are these two similar. In fact my project manager uses a powerbook and to be frank, these lappies are awesome. Listen i didn't mean to put anyone down, but I was under the impression that Jerboard had money thus money wasn't a factor in deciding. You have to take everything with a grain of salt, some people on this board are not strapped for cash so they are using other standards in deciding their purchase other than finance. In my experience, ibooks are bought by college and high school kids and in fact apple tailors these laptops towards this crowd. When i made the pussy statement i was thinking of one of my friends who is a big strapping lad, who can down more beers and be very wild (hehe you should see him outside class, this dude comes from the surfer head-banger mold) anyway this dude carries around a 12 inch ibook. You can imagine the dichotomy.

And Kakaze, what self respecting male would even consider being seen with a white lappy is lets just say.................

Hey you want to know the characteristics of a pussy?

But the battery life of powerbook is to weak. Just about 2 hours.
On the iBook its around 4 hours.

For a student that is enough to go with the iBook, since battery is one of the main issues when it comes to buying a notebook for school.

Hmm . . . I am not quite sure what sort of battery life my wife gets on her 15" G4, but I get at least 3 1/2 hours on my older 17" G4. Actually, I think my 17" G4 PowerBook gets pretty dang close to my 14" G4 iBook.

Actually, I get 3 hours and 15 minutes on a full charge. LOL . . . I just checked. I forget what it was when the battery was new. I have have has this particular rig for about 18 months.
