I've seen a lot of these on e-bay for relatively cheap, any opinions?

Unless you're strapped for cash, get a new Ibook. I've seen new Ibook 800mhz models for around $799.00 (128MB RAM, 20GB HD, CD-ROM).

Even the 1Ghz models come in at $999.00 for the base models.

What in particular about the new model makes it worth it?

iBooks are at 1.2 and 1.33 GHz now. They start at 999.

start at 899 if you can get the student discount.

correction. if u can live w/ 30GB and are interested in the 12", amazon has them for $999 w/ a $100 rebate and free shipping. i got my rebate inside of 4 weeks. i also didn't have to pay 4 taxes.

the base 12" w/ edu discount is 899 but lacks a combo drive. it's only a CD-ROM. the combo drive version is $949. for me after taxes, the machine thru apple would have come to $1018. thru amazon i got mine for $899 + $23 for 2nd day air, $922 total.

from what i've checked on the rebate covers the edu discount + tax difference and gives u a better price. if u r sold on the 12" but want a larger drive then a BTO thru apple is your best choice. if the base 12" will fly, go amazon. if the 14" combo or superdrive versions appeal to u, go amazon. hope this helps.

btw, the ibook 500mhz is a g3 right? the G3s are the ones w/ the bad track record w/ the logicboard failure.

4g also fail

so do the sonys, compaqs, dells, fujitsus, etc, etc

i know your friend has problems, but apparently u don't spend much time on mac forums. the logic board issue for the G4s is by in large an unmentioned issue. ppl have the run of the mill issues w/ the ibooks, short of viruses and windows based issues, but the mobo probs r so infrequent that it's simply a lemon issue. i.e.-most are good lil apples, but every now and again u do get a lemon as happens with all brands regardless of the component at hand.
