Now I don't feel so bad...

Bought my ZV5000 last July from Circuity City... since the day it went out of warranty (no lie ), I have had the charging problems mentioned here... thought I was alone... thank gawd I'm not...

My plug actually falls down when plugged in... figured it was because of a broken solder joint because the unit couldn't stay charging when power was on unless I press the charger in at an angle and then braced the cord to hold tension on it... figured fan vibrations making it shake... sure enough, I took my unit apart and confirmed that the solder joint on the AC adapter port sucks... now, the only way I can keep it going, power on or off, is by using the angled connector/braced cord method...

HP wants $300 to fix it with 1 week turnaround... and of course, they do the whole, we may have to replace other things as well... which as we lawyers say is Latin for "close your eyes and open your mouth..."

So, Ikenfixit, if I send you the unit (or the mother board), what's your turn around and cost as it seems I suffer the same malady as others here?

Thanks,
Curt

You many want to go to his website for a quick reply... In fact i think he has that information on one of the pages...

Something I've noticed though... Any zv5000 that i have sent in or had sent into HP for repairs on different things have not had this problem... Im wondering if they are fixing it when you send it in for like a bad screen and stuff like that... :/

My personal system has been sent in once for a hard drive problem and Its been over a year now no problems with the plug... I got the laptop July 6th, 2004...

I've also seen this problem now on a zv7000 which was also built around the same time...

Listen, there may be lots of people that would like to go after HP for this... Check out www.zv5000forums.com too...

I now have another zv5000 but it has a ADM (whatever) processor and does not get anywhere close to as hot as the one with the Intel Pentium. So far it's not giving me any problems.

As for the one that BROKE I now have a chill pad under it, and got another cord that by passes the power board, however it does not charge the battery!

Was you zv5000 had to tear into and get to the area where it need soldering?

Stagger..

Yes these are a royal pain in the butt to tear down and reasemble.. (Were getting 169.00 plus return ship fee of 14.00 Fed-ex insured for the job). Another thing is if you replace with the upgraded hard wire style jack? Will most definitley se a reoccurance of the problem. These over heat and leave a bad solder joint. Good luck and if you need help just yell.
I know this may not sound smart but have you tryed modifying the heatsink so it will help cool the jack? Do we know how hot the jack gets?

It takes a lot of constant heat to cause the solder joint to go bad...

There should be a multi-pin and a single pin power connector in the back of the main module of XC1000. Techexcess also sell it as a kit with the multi-pin power supply.

Hello everyone. I am having a similar problem with a zv5000, it shuts down almost immediately after powerup with battery + cord plugged in.

Additionaly, it makes a quiet clicking noise & does not power up on just A/C power.

I am attempting to contact ikenfixit via email or phone for additional help or repair work, however it seems both the number and email are not working. Does anyone have current contact information?

Thanks!
Kevin

Ok, I'm sick and haven't read the full thread. But what I do know is, that if you still have the warranty on the laptop, and the AC connector is loose or broken (without plastics damage on the base cover) then it will be under HP's warranty.

I am trying to find a source to buy the jacks for the zx5000 series, without being raped for the price..... $10 is WAAAAYYYY too much for a simple DC jack....

I am looking for a few spares for my laptop, for when I have to replace my jack. (Right now, just resoldering it)

Wow, you must have like a 50 cent an hour job?

I am not a well paid person either but would not waste my time trying to find a hard to find part for less than $10, my time is more valuable than that.

My suggestion is don't waste time so you can save $2 or $3 or even $5, you will be working way below the minimum wage for that savings, and being paid below the Federal Minimum wage is against the law!

Well my zv5000 (laptop #2)power connection just bit the dust just like the first one I bought (laptop #2). I bought the cable from http://www.techexcess.net/hp-xc1000-...le-dv318a.aspx for laptop #1 but HATE all those cables hanging off the side!!

Ikenfixit: Does your $89 to fix this crap still stand?

Also: is there any other cable besides the mulit-purpose one listed above out there to use?

The media cable will work and I cant for the life of me figure out why HP would even manufacture a cable to bypass the adapter circuit for these models unless the fact was the issue was preknown to surface down the road. (Engineering at its finest).. We get 169.00 on the ZX, ZV, ZD, As well as R-3000 compaqs and relative twin models.. (They are a pain to do). There is also a class action suit in the works for these units and the specific jack failures related to them.

I had exactly the same problem regarding the loose DC jack on my Sharp laptop. Before repairing it, I used to place something under the jack to make the power going through the laptop, but power intermittence was just getting more frequent and the jack was looser. What I did was to disassemble the laptop and resolder the DC jack. I bought a soldering iron, some solder, and thermal glue for attachment between the CPU and heatsink, from Amazon.com for a total of $30.

One suggestion: the "surge current" generated by power intermittence is large enough to damage components on power-related circuits and the battery. Yes, the battery because two of my batteries died as a result of power intermittence. Also, I found a small area surrounding the soldering points of the DC jack looked like burned due to the surge current. Glad my laptop is working after repaired.

Radio Shack has a cheap Soldering iron for 9.00 that is a combo 15/30 watt and they work well. Glad you could repair yourself and weve helped people over the phone and via e-mail tackle the job themselves as well. The biggest mistake we see is the fact the Positive trace is on the top or jack side of the board and too many times they try to resolder from the bottom w/out scraping the carbonization from the positive pin. (Wont last for long). Then 2 weeks down the road they end up having to tear down and do over. A good trick on these is to loop a piece of 22 guage wire around the top rear of the pin... (If its the hardwire style Signitron jack), Solder here as well as on the line side of the Ferrite bead L-1.. This helps for heat dessipation and they seem to be holding up fine. You are also correct this can kill baterys, They have a circuitboard internally and are sensitive to intermitent supply line issues. Also if the second wire is added you should take a round file and make a dish in the aluminum fan bracket for the jack as the gap is close to the pos. and can short here at the bottom in the rear.

OK: Took the HPZV5000 apart and yep the solder joint was broke. Solderred it and it's now nice and sturdy.

Put computer back together.

Plugged in the power cord and the charging light lit right up! Yipee...

Now here's where the sad part starts:

Turned on the computer, power lights came on and the hard drive light flashed once then nothing! It just sets there.

Screen black, no sounds, nothing but the blue power light on, the charging light on, the three short cut lights are on, Wireless Internet NOT on.

So what did I do wrong guys... anyone got any suggestions?
