external hard drive fried?

Greetings, I am using a maxtor 5000dv external hard drive to back up my data. It has run flawlessly for a year. My generator just quit on me and cut power to everything. I restarted the generator and now my ext. HD is emitting a beeping, almost like a cell phone ring, and it will not be recognized.

Any ideas?

uh...

I got it working again by "tapping" on the side of the unit. I guess the platter was just locked up for some reason? Not a good sign so i will be replacing soon. I will do my best to have maxtor replace but I would like opinions on the most dependable external HD?
