Widescreen Laptops and Games with 4:3 AR

Hello Everyone,

First I must say " Great Site" !!!

I currently own a Pro-Star 8814 (Clevo D800p) with a SXGA 16.1" LCD that is 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Not one flaw with this system but the MR9600 Pro is becoming dated to say the least. Besides work I love the ability to have a mobile gaming system. Lock-on Modern Air Combat, Forgotten Battles IL-2, Pacific Fighters, and Battlefield Vietnam is what I am playing now. All seem to be set to 4:3 Aspect Ratio. How well do these work with these new Widescreens? Does it look like Silly Puddy placed on a Newspaper and then pulled wider? No Seriously, I am concerned about the image not being rendered correctly.

Yes I know how to edit the registry and edit config files in games but, I really do not want this hassle. Just load up the CD and . If you know what I mean. I want to be flying not playing with the setup so much.

What brings me to this question is the future upgrade coming soon due to the dual core CPU's and Graphics Options these systems offer. If these Widescreens do not pose a threat, a WUXGA sounds up my alley, If there are too many hassles, I will keep in search for a UXGA 15" or 16" 4:3 Aspect Ratio System.

Any sound advice or on hands knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Monnie Rock.
I know what you mean about the 4:3 aspect ratio.
These 16:9 widescreens look strange imho.
Unfortunately I can't answer gaming on a widescreen as all I have are 4:3 screens.
I am sure someone will be able to impart some knowledge on the topic.
You may even care to post a message in the gaming sub-forum.
And just in case something goes wrong or you need technical help we have the 88xx technical sub-forum as well.

Enjoy your stay.

Well most newer games seem to work fine on the 16:9 ratio for me. The ones that actually support the right resolutions i.e hl2 are awesome, but to telly ou the truth i barely notice the stretching even on newer games that dont, however really old games (pre 2002) look absolutely horrible with them imo

There's a setting in the Display properties that allows one to adjust whether you want the game stretched to the widescreen aspect or not. If not, it stays in its native resolution with black around the edges filling up the widescreen part (not as obtrusive as it sounds).

I can't vouch for any of those particular games, but there are quite a few games that are offering widescreen support. I was really hesitant about the widescreen issue myself, but now that I've got it, I'll never go back to 4:3. If I had to for some reason, I'd go kicking and screaming.

ATi 9700 that came in all the 8790s. I believe the nVidia cards have the same capability. Don't quote me on that, tho'.

And I second the vote on the Widescreen Gaming forums. Good stuff!

You'd be surprised how many games support widescreens. I even play NWN and Morrowind (which aren't that new) and they support it just fine. Also, it is normally 16:10, not 16:9.

In the case of my LCD, I have 3 options for non-native res. I can have it run at its 1:1 resolution (involves black bars around it), I can have it fill the screen, or I can have it scale to within its aspect ratio...the latter has less black bars and no distortion. But, you'd be amazed how many things run widescreen now, and it'll only get better as these types of displays are getting much more common.

Thank you Everyone for the warm welcome as well as excellent suggestions about this topic. Research will be the factor on my part.

Lock on supports about 5000 different resolutions. So I've had no probs with it on my 1440x900 screen.

And I run PF and Il-2 on my widescreen, but I have edited the .config file. Not much of a hassle, just two lines. (I do have the "black bars", but as has been said, they are not intrusive, just seems a shame to waste that much screenspace. )
