it's only getting harder...

Everyday, I spent some time looking at these forums to find a good laptop. But everyday, I hear about more brands, and it is getting harder to choose.
I started with Dell I9200, I8600, I6000 or Compaq X6000. Now I also got Asus N6B. Univil 256 series also look pretty good. But it seems like, you can't directly buy from them, and I somehow can't really trust to those online sites such as Vicious PC. Now I am more confused than I was at the beginning.

You know that one company has been there from the beginning, and still produce first rate machines today: IBM.

there are alot of choices...but I think you really need to consider what you need the most...and then eliminate based on that. is price the most impt? is weight, etc.

well, I got a maximum price of around 1500-1600
I won't be using it for gaming that much.. but I want to be able to run the newest games so that at least it will last couple years...
I want a 15.4" screen becasue I watch movies a lot...
something around mid range I guess...

I just got the new Gateway 7422GX and must say I'm very impressed.

Athlon 3400+ 2.2 GHz
1 Gig of RAM
80 Gig Harddrive (though 4200 RPM, probably the biggest bottleneck in the system. However, the computer still is plenty fast. And you can easily upgrade to a faster HD for a hundred dollars or so)
ATI 9550, which most say is the same as the 9600. With 64 MB discrete RAM. Runs Half-Life 2 great at 1024x768 with highest detail settings.

Writes Dual Layer DVDs.
7 in 1 Memory Card Reader.
Nice, bright 15.4" Ultrabrite screen.

In my opinion, one of the best bang for the buck deals out there. When I bought it, it was $1249US at Best Buy. It's now back at its normal price of $1399, but look out for deals.

You should check out the pinned thread in the General Gateway forum. Lots of good info on the laptop.

hope whatever you decide on makes you as happy as this one does for me.

honestly...if you aren't going to use it for gaming that much...you shouldn't worry about that too much...for 1500-1600 bucks you pretty much can't get anything that'll last for 2-3 years of the newest games anyway.

A 15.4" screen is definitely doable...do you want a wxga, wsxga+, etc...

Right now, there are a ton of possibilities...its hard to narrow down based on what you've said.

Details, details, details

The Dell i8600 and i9200 should be suitable based on those requirements even with the ati 9600 or 9700 included in the configuration, right now Dell even has a few pre-configged that match your price well.

How about this,

do you want to move this around, or will it be a laptop deskbound most of the time that you just want to be able to move around sometimes?

AC power or battery most of the time?

Those two questions would narrow it some. If you don't "need" it to move with you a lot just look at the bigger models (Dell 9200, ect). If you are going to watch those movies next to a wall plug, don't mess with Centreno or the moble set-ups. Just get a regular CPU style laptop. If you need 3+ hours cordless then swap that. Toss out the desktop processor laptops and only look and moble.

I'll be traveling time to time, so I prefer a pentium M, with a SXGA+ screen.
I saw a 17" model laptop but they are too big, so I'll stick with 15.4"

ASUS M6

was there ever an easier choice?

Normal aspect ration screens (ie SXGA+) only come in the screen size of 15.1", not 15.4" which is for widescreens.

Asus M6n or perhaps Aopen 1557. Those would be my choices. Whichever you can find cheaper.

Asus M6BNe is what I went for after going through your same dilema.

If you can strech to $1800ish the Acer TM8103 looks like it fits all your bills and more, and the MRX700 is more than 2 times as fast as the MR9700.
