I've read the specs sheet for the PM on the Intel site, and though they don't give what I can decipher as "appropriate" operating temperatures, they do give a thermal threshold of 100*C, at which point the CPU makes use of it's Dynamic Switching capability and throttles down (I think in increments 12.5% speed
) until appropriate temperatures for those speeds are obtained, after which it will resume full throttle again. Motherboard shutdown to the CPU occurs via BIOS control @ 125*C.
I've been trying to find out just what temperature I should set my FanGUI.exe to maintain for my Dothan 1.8.
A couple of variables come to mind that may explain the wide ranges in temps we see for the same CPU.
All heat sink & fan assemblies are not the same. Different models will have different fan speeds and the thermal sensor will be located in different spots.
Laptop case ventilation is going to be very different for each model, as well. The variables in this alone are infathonable.
Different BIOSes are going to respond differently to the thermal sensors, including read refresh rate. Motherboard maximum temperatures are bound to be different and play into when the BIOS decides to kick the fan on. The BIOS may also kick the fan (or fans) on when other components reach predetermined temperature thresholds - for example, DIMM temp. This could mean that different RAM in otherwise equal laptops will yield different CPU temp readings!
So my point is, someone who is way smarter than I am needs to read the specsheet PDF found on Intel and suggest the ideal operating range for the PM. Then that info needs to be wieghed by the individual laptop owner to make a comprimise between fan run time and CPU temperature. That's going to be matter of personal choice for folks even with the same laptops.
Currently on my I9200, I have I8FanGUI.exe set to run both my CPU & GPU fans @ slow speed when the CPU reaches 50*C, and shut off @ 45*C. When the CPU reaches 60*C, both fans come on full speed until it drops down to 55*C. Then fans switch to "slow" speed, and shut off @ 45*C.
