'Safely remove hardware' Problem

Thread Starter
Hi,
I have an external harddisk connected to my 8600. Whenever I try to goto safely remove hardware and click on it, it tells me that the decice cannot be stopped right now. try stopping the device later. This is even though I have not even accessed the hardisk after startup. I have tried a few times to disconnect it even after the error and have had no trouble but I might have been luck and I want to figure out a safe way of disconnecting my external harddrive without powering down my laptop. Basically its a pain disconnecting everything when I want to take my laptop away with me for a couple of hours. Please advise.
Thanks

Look at step 6 here:

Basically you have to disable caching. Still, I remember that even after I did that it still wouldn't let me do it. If that happens try disabling the drive in the device manager.

I have had the same problem; my assumption was that the virus protection program was working on the files of the usb disk at the time ...

you could try to identify the process and stop it, but why not hibernate the system? takes only a couple of seconds

make sure all explorer windows are closed that might be listing the drive. Then if it still won't do it the nice way, just unplug it. It won't harm anything. I do it all the time. Sometimes, (mostly not, though), you will have to reboot to get it to reconnect, however even then, you can plug it into a different port if you have one and have it work. Don't be like "Ooh, Windows won't let me unplug my drive."
