Stupid OS question

Thread Starter
I am about to purchase a 9860 ( as soon as my income tax return comes back!! ) and I want to order it with an OS but I wanted to know what the practical differences would be with XP home and XP pro. I want to play games but also want to run photo shop, Dream weaver and a bunch of other apps. What would the real benefit be between the 2 OSs? They should both run all the Aps right? (I have never used XP home but I really dont know what the diference would be)

It comes with all original CDs, recovery CDs and drivers' CD.

If you order the laptop with Win XP Pro, it is SP2.

Just remember if you RMA the laptop, you might as well keep all opened CDs b/c you will be charged for them.

If you have to ask which OS, go with XP Home. If you are the only user and not networked, you do not really need XP Pro. You can do all that you said you wanted and more with Home, AND save a few bucks. Pro gives a few networking options, and some extra tools. I have both, and can not see a REAL working difference between the two. Save the bucks and go with Home.

I thought XP home doesn't support Hyper Threading...

Nope,

Win XP Home support HyperThreading. I cans see the 2 processor under windows XP Home.

...there is no such thing as a stupid OS question...just stupid OSs....err, something like that....

What artorious said..

However, there is one point brought up by Aussie in another thread a couple weeks back that bears repeating....resale value.

Because people have attached some mysterious extra value to Pro, despite the fact that value has little impact on the typical user, the resale of a machine with XP pro installed (and remember, you have to transfer the OS to the person since an OEM installation stays with the machine), a notebook with XP Pro may return some extra $.

I'll second what artorius and gerryf said. If you're not planning on connecting to multiple networks, XP Home is your best choice. But consider resale value too - people hear XP Pro and think "Wow, XP Pro... " even though they really probably won't use any of the extra features.

I recommend going with XP Pro only because you suggested that you will doing web-site related stuff as well. If ever you intend to do some ASP or ASP.NET stuff tomorrow, you will need IIS which does'nt come with XP Home. You need XP Pro for that and all the benefits that come with it as explained by ppl above in this thread.

I'm not sure I understoood that from the first post....the fact he is using dreamweaver doesn't necessarily mean he's doing heavy web development, and thus needs a webserver test bed.

You do make a good point, though. Having a local webserver on your machine does make development easier than uploading to a remote site---that said, he could easily install apache to his laptop if that were the case...and then the inbuilt IIS is only relevent if he is using ASP.
