Dell D610 - impressed so far.

Just received a new Dell D610 and I have to say that I am duly impressed with some improvements over the M60 that I purchased a year or two ago.

First and formost, the trackpoint buttons are much, much better than the ones that were on my M60. They are actually usable!

Another issue that has been addressed is the heat on the palm rest. I had it on last night for 3-4 hours and it remained cool to the touch the entire time.

The overall build quality is IMO better than what I experienced with the M60.

I've got 30 days to play with this before I decide to keep or return, so I'm going to put it through it's paces. Sorry, no games.

FYI, 2.0 ghz, 80gig, SXGA+, X300, DVD-RW, 1gig memory.

Questions?

Now that some one actually has a D610 in their hands can you take a look around it and see if the Graphic card is upgradeable? Also could you load some games (if you play games) and just tell us how they run?

Yeah right, one of the first things he's going to do with the laptop is void his warranty by opening it up. The service manual doesn't tell you that?
what kind of feedback does the trackstick buttons give? do they click or are they same feeling as M60/D800/D600 by soft press?
The video card is NOT upgradeable. Live with that or buy a D810.

Can you tell us more about the lcd, because a dell tech told me that is was a 70ms refresh screen.

And just how are they gonna if one has opened their laptop up? As long as nothing is broken theres no way to tell. If something was broken while opening it up, of course that shouldnt be covered by warranty.

And no, I doubt anyone here wants to take a brand new laptop apart unless they're sending it back, like that guy with the 9200 who took his laptop apart and posted pics before sending it back

That's great news. Please keep report an update on this issue after more extended use. This was my single biggest gripe with the D600. I returned mine to Dell because of it.

Dell uses that fingerprint light (like the one on CSI) and DNA analysis of course

Even if they do find jelly (from the doughnut you were eating while you worked on your computer and it fell on the motherboard, frying it) inside the returned/exchanged unit, I doubt they would complain.

Poor souls. Take the laptop apart? Why? Just look at this:

Latitude D610 takedown

That's how I like people, skeptic to hell.

I will write up a review once I get to spend a little serious time with it. One day is not quite enough.

The LCD is excellent. I have an M60 with WUXGA and I think this is superior to it. Much, much better than the LCD on my T42.

Can't compare to the D600/600m because I don't have one.

Viewing angle is excellent.

Today I used it with the advance port replicator and a Dell Ultrasharp 19" LCD. Worked great.

On the M60, the buttons had to be PUSHED, not pressed, all the way day before they would register. On this laptop, they are much easier to press and seem to register without the noticeable PUSHING all the way down. I actually got a sore thumb using them on my M60 and they are much more comfortable to use on the D610. Seems like the keyboard has been firmed up also. I can just fly on this keyboard. Even more so than the T42 which is just excellent also.

I can't exactly put my finger on it, but they've definitely made some improvements in the keyboard and trackpoint/buttons. I don't use the touchpad, but it appears they changed the buttons for those also.

I find this a suitable replacement for the T42. In addition, it seems to be much faster. The T42 is a 1.8 and this is 2.0 ghz.

I was going to immediately upgrade the hard drive to a Seagate Momentus 100 gig, but when I took out the hard drive, it looks like it wouldn't fit. Some kind of pin extender was on the Travelstar drive that was installed. Anyone have experience with this.

Just pop off the pin extender, and put it on the new drive. (Being careful not to bend pins, of course.)

Very glad to hear that! Yeah, Dell have made the keyboard more sturdier and sealed so it'd protect circuit stuffs from liquids. I wasn't sure if it's all talking. but looks like it's true then! Looking forward to get my D810!

Sounds good. I would imagine the screen is probably the same as is/are used on the d600/600m. My 600m has been compared to many different LCD's and the brightness and color/contrast are definitely exceptional. No reason it should be different on the d610.

I also have quite a rigid keyboard on my 600m. To be honest, I actually prefer a little spring (like in my older A22m Thinkpad) but I'm getting used to it. I know the 600m/d600's took a vocal bashing early on due to their "springboard" keyboards, but my 600m feels like it's got a plate of granite underneath it!! (rock solid)

Now.........if I can just get the depot to put an LCD in that ***doesn't*** have a problem, I'll be fine!!!

Yeah, the lcd is good for a laptop but you can see a glaring difference to 8600's lcd, namely the viewing angle on the 600m's is poor. I think and hope 610's lcd is different.

You probably got the more solid keyboard as pictured in this thread:

Check the back of your keyboard.

Thanks Dellbert. That's what it looked like to me, but I couldn't find my pliers so I decided to stay with the 80 gig that I ordered. Very quiet and I don't have the annoying clicking that I did with the 80 gig that is in my T42.

Yesterday, I did have problems using my Samsung 213T (21") LCD with the advance port replicator. I was getting some interference that resulted in the some screen shimmy. I tried a few things, but couldn't get it fixed, so I switched to my Dell Ultrasharp 19" and it worked fine. Still like to figure out why the Samsung didn't work right, but I've had some problems with it and other laptops from time to time.
