Linux on MAC?

Would I be able to put linux on a mac? Are there any computers that are better than others for linux. I have used dos, and windows my whole life, I liked dos a lot, and would really like to try our linux. I don't want to screw around with my new notebook (live cd) or anything, I know it really doesn't hurt the computer, but I just don't want to do anythign risky. I will prolly just get a cheap laptop to screw areound with linux, tweak files ect... any suggestions?

Yeah, there are PPC ports (and 68k ports).

There is a gentoo guide here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

Gentoo is definitely not your only option, there are tons of PPC documents out there.

If you just want to experiment with linux then that's dandy but OS X is a nice option. It's a fantastic OS.

.. as for suggestions .. your first steps with Linux are going to be about experimenting (that is, if you are truly interested in the workings of the OS). Your idea of using a cheap non-critical system to play with the OS is a good one.

Linux runs on just about anything. You can make your installation as big or as small as you want it to conserv/blow resources.

Thaks, I am definatly a windows user, but would like to switch (I game ALOT HL2, Farcry, Diablo2, warcraft 3FT, Rome total war.. the list goes on) and have no intention of keeping OSX, if I get a mac. I have always wanted to learn linux, and just got a junk computer off e-bay fixed it up and I am going to install red hat on it. The reason I am asking is because my girlfriend loves linux (when I boot it Live on my old computer [slackware]) and is getting a mac for college. She wants to put linux on it. She doesn't game or anything, just needs a reliable OS that suites her needs. (and she just likes how the macs look) so your saying it does work on mac?

Does your girlfriend realise that OS X is unix based and that almost everything you can do in Linux you can do in OS X? With Fink installed you can do even more things.

That being said, Ubuntu linux runs on Mac hardware. There's also Yellow Dog, Mandrake, and I believe there's a version of Fedora for PPC.

Ubuntu seems to be a more put together Linux than any that I've ever seen before.

edit: fixed stupid error on my part. Ubuntu doesn't run on OS X, it runs on Mac hard ware.

ubuntu is the sh*t for everything but media. also, getting java working right can be problematic

If you are a big gamer...

Dont go linux. Stick with OSX or do a dual boot. Mac OSX is not a bad OS and is similar to Linux(BSD not Linux, but pretty close) and you will be able to compile and run a fiar amount of software on it written for use with Linux. And you will still be able to play a lot of Mac versions of games, cant say that is true with Linux right now unfortunatly.

Heh not nessecarily. Depending on where you go you can still find a good amount of choices for the Mac, I was fairly surprised when I started looking at Mac for a new laptop and glanced at the game choices(Dont game much anymore, dont have time
