Design & Multimedia Laptop Suggestions

I know, I know! You guys are probably sick of "what laptop?" questions, but I guess I'll chance my arm because my head may just explode after all the dead-end research I've been doing.

Basically, I want something fairly portable (i.e. a PM rather than a P4), yet with enough kick to act as a fairly decent design and multimedia development machine. I'd be using the Adobe Creative Suite, After Effects, Flash, Director, etc. and probably a bit of 3dsmax if the machine could handle it. I'm not a mad gamer, but I'd like to be able to play HL2/WoW, etc. occasionally. I don't want a desktop replacement, per se, but something that I can use when I'm out of the office or mooching in front of the TV. I'm a teeny girl, so I don't think I could lug about anything too heavy.

I've been searching this forum for ages, but I keep changing my mind. One minute I was set on an IBM T42 (but to get the specs I want I'd have to sell some organs), then I decided on an Acer TravelMate 8006LMi, and now I'm hovering around the Dell i8600/M60/M70. It's made doubly hard because I'm in Ireland and we just don't have the range that the US has. Not to mention the fact that everything is twice as expensive. I'd rather not import a laptop, though, as I want to be able to get decent support if anything goes wrong.

On my list at the moment are:

Acer TM 8006LMi - Looks lovely, but I'm worried about Acer support and the conflicting reports about the screen quality.
Dell i8600 - The safe option. I can get a great deal from the outlet and, of course, I'd fork out for a 3 year warranty. Everyone tells me not to go Dell, though.
Dell Precision M20/M60/M70 - Funnily enough, I can spec out an M60 *cheaper* than an i8600 on the dell.ie site. I don't know if I'd be doing enough 3D work to warrant the gfx card, and I doubt it's that much of a boost over the Radeon for 2D and video work. The M70 looks hot, but there have been no reviews yet. The M20 looks great (and light!), but the gfx card seems a bit weak and, again, no reviews yet.
Asus M6Ne - Again, looks great, but I'm a bit iffy about the mere 64MB Radeon although people seem to think that it hardly underperforms against the 128mb. Is this true?

Does anyone have some suggestions? Or other brands/models that are available in Ireland/the UK/Europe? My budget is anything from €1000-2000(ish), and I can get VAT off as I'm self-employed.

Thanks so much in advance for any helpful advice, folks!

What about the Acer TM 8100? That seems to be the best "new" notebook at the moment, there's a thread about it here - http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=59520

Also when do you need the notebook...I ask because the new models are beginning to come out, so right now we're in the transitional phase. Do you want the new Sonoma platform with the higher specs and PCI-e graphics (should be fully available in the next 1-2 months)? Would you rather have the AMD Turion lappys that are slated to debut around the end of April? Or are you looking for a deal on maybe a closeout model of the old Centrino platform?

For more info on Sonoma and the notebooks that offer it, go here:

HL2 requires a fairly high-end machine (when you take todays standards into account), as opposed to any of the graphical design software you listed. So you'd mostly be paying for a machine that can handle HL2, while you could quite possibly get a machine for half that price, that can still handle all those design software apps, yet would perform weakly on HL2. Judging from your budget however, I guess that isn't a huge problem.

- I wouldn't go with a 64MB Radeon. I performs only semi average on HL2.
- I'm not sure if I'd rather take a Centrino over a P4 if you're doing graphic intensive stuff.
- The Centrino definitely seems to ofer better portability however, and prolonged battery life.
- Overal I'd rather go with something that has an NVidia card.

Sorry I can't be much more help. :/

On a side note, Acer support is good overall, just slow.

Kali

I just ordered a decked out M70 for about $4700.00 USD. I too will be using it for DCC. Most likely Adobe Suite, but i am a Catia Designer, so I need the 256 NVidia Gfx card. If you hurry (Today) there is a coupon for 25% off, thats right, 25 percent off retail.

I'd say go with ASUS or Acer...
Don't be too concerned about the 64 mb Radeon, it won't underperform much at all, if any.

Where did you find this coupon? They're advertising $250 dollars off, but I don't see anything about 25%. That's a lot of money.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks!

My budget just keeps creeping up and up the more I look at laptops. I'm all "oh, well, I might as well spend an extra €100 if I'm going to be using it lots." I think I need to rein myself in a bit.

I've been lurking in the TM8100 thread with interest. I'm just waiting for a few more reviews to appear. I guess it'll probably be either an Acer Travelmate 8100/8000 (the Ferraris look great, but I just can't make myself buy a shiny red laptop) or the Dell M60. I'd go for the M70, but I don't do crazy amounts of 3D, and I can get an outlet M60 for an excellent price and then upgrade in a coupla years. I reckon the M60 is still a pretty kickass portable workstation, anyway. I'd also rather have a 3D-friendly gfx card than a game-friendly gfx card - I still have my desktop and I doubt I'll be playing much HL2 on the road. Unfortunately here in Europe we don't get the utterly crazy Dell coupon deals that you guys get...

Thanks again! I didn't realise buying a laptop would be this hard.
