im tired of w8ing for the 8100 & this S2 looks to be a nice alternative w/ its own unique features. the size between the two are similar & hardware as well. the biggest difference i see is that its in the 4:3. whatcha think...?
post #4 of 33
Sad is it is XGA and not SXGA, so that is a bummer

The 8100 comes with 100GB 5400RPM HD w/16MB Buffer. This one comes with standard 40GB 5400.

Also, if configure it to match as closely as what 8100 offers, this cost more.

60GB HD 7200rpm is also nice. ur choices for resolution is XGA or UXGA . configure the two to resemble each other & prices is $2171.50. overpriced...?
post #6 of 33
What is the pen/pen holder on the side for?

How does GeForce 6600 compare with X600 and X700?

How weird is measuring thickness as 1.17"-1.46" "without feet"? Can you take the feet off? Then why measure without feet?

Looks good...

Compared with 8103, yup it is over priced.
* SXGA
* 100GB 5400 w/16MB Buffer
* $1899.00
* 512MB RAM
* 15.4" Screen
* Lighter and better chassis design
post #8 of 33
Odd, XGA and UXGA. Where's the happy medium? The price with a 760 and 1GB RAM isn't bad though, if only they offered an SXGA I would really consider it.
post #9 of 33
Well except for the processor, LCD and graphics cards you can pretty much configure it to be a barebones notebook. And at $1349.00 for a P-M 750, GeForce Go 6600, XGA screen (for gamers), it doesn't sound all that bad! My only 3 questions are:

-Anyone know if this notebook is PCI-E? (can't find it anywhere on the Toshiba Direct site)
-Anyone know if you can change the provided RAM for DDR2 533Mhz RAM?
-Anyone know when this notebook's going to be available to the rest of the world? In my case, Canada??

Well, come to think of it...priced okay..

Tecra S2

Still the draw back is
No SXGA
No 15.4" screen

* 512MB RAM
* 15" screen
* chassic just as light. better design is a matter of opinion

no ddr2 but dont think that'd make much of a difference in performance considering the weak Sonoma 533mhz fbs. besides, ddr is cheaper . whatcha mean no standard wifi? just add $30 & its urs.

$1834.00
UXGA
60 GB 7200 (100 GB 5400 RPM with 16mb is nearly as fast and nearly 2x as large.
512 megs 1 stick
A/B/G Card
Blue Tooth
8X DL DVD Burner
128 meg 6600 Go

$1949 (and it's DDR 1 not DDR 2, and no 5 in 1 card reader on the toshiba, and only one year warranty, I read the 8103 has a 2 year)

it's not bad but the 8104 is sort IMHO a better deal, and has a more powerfull battery. And I can see why people are saying overpriced the first time I configured it to be what I was thinking about It came out to like $2300.

in respect to a notebook this size & its gaming potential, the edge goes to the S2 w/ the Pentium 770 & gf6600, but like you said the 8100 is slightly a better deal since it does give u everything under the sun

Hmm I got the following you guys:

1.86 Ghz Pm
40 Gig 5400 <---Can sell an upgrade to a 60 Gig 7200 RPM Later
256 Meg Ram <---Throw on a 512 stick later
3 Year warranty
15" UXGA
Intel 2200 Wireless

$1479. The Ram I'd upgrade automatically for 100 bucks.
I'm leaning towards this because Toshiba service center is about several miles from me and I've dealt with them before with postitive results. What do you guys think?

post #19 of 33
Woops. I'm at $1629 with teh GFX upgrade. I forgot to add that. Hmm...I'll have to think a bit more about this.

What type of RAM does this use? Toshia lists this as DDR333 SDRAM, if so we can buy the ram later for alot cheaper ($130 off price grabber for cheapest. I just don't know the socket type. The detailed PDF says something different. Anyone know?
