Asus Z71V Spec *Available Here* - Page 9

You'll get warranty from the supplier... usually it's just 1 year warranty.
Only pre-configured notebooks from ASUS get ASUS Global warranty

So if I follow in your footsteps I needn't worry about anything but dead pixels. BTW if it did need to be assembled, I'd have it shipped to you then shipped to me completely fixed up
Heh

What follows below is Asus' warranty for barebone notebooks (what the Asus Z71v is):

Hello, I am somewhat new to this forum, and this is my first post.

I will be buying a laptop soon and was looking for some info/recommendations.

I want a notebook that will be good for gaming for a few years at least, while being relatively thin and lightweight with good battery life.

So far I'm looking at the Asus z71v and v6v.

Not considering physical characteristics the z71v seems to be a clear choice, however I'd really prefer the size/weight/looks of the v6v and especially the alloy chassis.

I have never seen a [Color Shine (glare type) and Crystal Shine (high brightness)] LCD, as on the v6v. Is it much nicer? Anyone know if the asus "*Zero Bright Dot LCD Policy" on that LCD is for any dead pixels or just a certain kind of bright dead pixel? I think a dead pixel would annoy the hell out of me.

As far as resolution I prefer lower than UXGA but not a major concern. I dont have a preference as far as Wide screen or not.

I'm pretty certain I want a sonoma processor instead of dothan (benias/carmel?), DDR2 memory, PCIe generation video (preferably 128MB x700 or 6600), etc, but might settle for the first gen dothan/9700 if everything else about the laptop right in line with what I want, and notably cheaper (only about 5% performace difference I understand).

Also, from what I've researched, the z71v has better batter life than the v6v (up to 6.5hrs vs up to 5hrs). Does the ALS feature of the z71v cause this difference?

Are there any other notebook models available now or soon (next few weeks) with performance similar to the z71v more or less, but with a nice thin alloy chassis like the v6v?

If only the v6v had an ATI x700, a fast dual layer DVD burner, and cost less than $2000USD the choice would be so much easier..

Feel free to answer any/all of these questions or make any suggentions.

Thanks.

Regarding the screen on the V6v, someone started a thread with that info. http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=68589 Regarding your choice, the Acer 8103 has similar performance to the Z71v and looks cool, but the battery life is nowhere near as good. I think the Sager 4880 looks okay, and it also is similar spec-wise to the Z71v, but it's not widescreen, which dropped it for me. Dell's Inspiron 9300 has a 17" display, slightly better specs (6800 graphics vs 6600), but I'm pretty sure it's not alloy. I hear your frustration in looking for the perfect computer, but companies don't always do what you want them to do, unfortunately. It eventually breaks down to this: either what's more important to you or how long are you willing to wait until a model that has everything you want comes out?

RobotChicken - my timetable to buy a notebook is the first week of April. Hopefully, I will have enough information to compare the v6v, w3 and z71v

I will agree with you on this one - value and price for the z71v, except that the v6 is thin and the alloy chassis will be sweet to look at! I do factor a lot as to form too

I guess if you are not in a hurry, most of the models we see today will get the sonoma chips in a few months, with slight or no change in the chassis..(May to June - just my guess).

Like anything in the tech world, changes are often and fast. I read a lot in the forums, and once I buy.. I enjoy without looking back, except if defective of course.

Right now, if I can't decide with the v6 or w3, the z71 seems to be on top of my list when I buy April..

I am getting used to the looks....it is not bothering me too much anymore as when I first saw some pictures. The configurable features and the price helps not to focus too much on how the unit looks like.

smilepak - any idea of what type of display will be used in the z71v (other than the ambient light sensor)? Have you placed your order yet? I am trying to hold on buying anything until I see some reviews, although being tempted to pre-order. Thank you.
I'm not smilepak, but maybe I can help: it's a non-glossy 15.4" WSXGA+ screen.

Yup, what he said I am torn between two lover and I am still deciding on it.

Toshiba Tecra S2 or Asus Z71V

Toshiba Dependable, Reliable, Build for the business world. UXGA TruBright Screen
Asus DDR2 memory, a tad cheaper

Decision Decision

Djembe_Rob - do you know when they will ship your z71v? Is 3-21 a definite date? I can't wait to read some initial takes on this one...best so far for its price.

Thanks for the info on the display. At least I will not expect a unit similar to those bright screens I see around in the retail stores..Non-glossy will be good for working on spreadsheets I guess. Any idea if this is good for games (although I do not play much, my son will)?

Most places will receive those in this coming week. When they will actually get ship out is not sure.

It has a nice video card to support majority of games w/o any problem.
FiloD, I was told that they would ship between the 14th and 21st, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much too soon. Assuming that the resellers know what they're talking about, mine will be shipped by the 21st at the latest.

man why dont they offer the glossy screen on this or the v6..
i really wanted this or the v6 - does asus usually modify things after the initial release?

I agree - when you think it is the model you want, there is always something missing! ...just decided with what the v6 and z71 offers, I will sacrifice on the glossy screen for now -

until of course smilepak mentioned about the Toshiba Tecra's! (although the z71v is still on top on my list as of now, I want to wait a little while for the w3, hopefully before the first week of April) -

So on paper, the V6V and Z71V are pretty much equivalent? (-1 point for the 64MB vid card but +3000 for the size and mobility for the V6V, -1 point for the size and looks of Z71V but +3000 for th nVidia 6600 on PCI-E)

I would just want to see benchmarks of the x600 against the 6600 while both are on the PCI-E... if the x600 scores just as well then my pick would go straight for the V6V but I would highly doubt that it can compare with the 6600 on next-gen games like hL2 and Doom3.

same here BannedNinja - I also like the size, mobility and the beauty (at least for me) of the v6. The 64mb video card is good enough for me, and I am even willing to pay a little extra $ for the brushed aluminum palmrest, carbonfiber bottom chassis, magnesium alloy lid...

but now that I want a widescreen - guess what it does not offer a widescreen!

Good luck for finding your first laptop bannedninja..

z71v still top on my list and I think I will learn to live with the way it looks...
Man, only if the 6600 got downsized to fit in the V6V... then that would be my choice without question. But there are ALWAYS tradeoffs in this world that we have to live with and prioritize...

If only huh...You gotta keep it real man. How can a laptop have all those components and be less than $2k

It totally isn't going to compare to the 6600. When the 6600 is supposed to compete with the x700 and it does away with the x600.
