I thought the v6v does have a glossy screen.

15.1" SXGA+ Crystal Shine (high brightness) LCD Panel

But yeah, maybe not so impressive..

Well after looking some various latops at a store, I've decided the 15.4" widescreen is a bit too large for me. Although they are kind of nice, these laptops are a bit bulky in my opinion.

Even though their weight is not much, most of these 15.4" notebooks seem larger to me than my current notebook (a Dell Inspiron 8100 15" UXGA, P3M1GHz, GeForce2go 32MB, which is pretty thick and weighs about 8 or 8.5 lbs or so). I definately want a good downsizing. But I've only seen the mainstream models (toshiba, sony, HP, Compaq, etc)

As far as the glossy screens, they do look very nice but reflections might get annoying sometimes, so I can go either way on that.

The slower RAM and only 64MB of VRAM in the V6V doesnt bother me much (probably wont have any great pefrormance difference), but I really think a NV6600 or ATIx700 would be a real improvement.

The Sager 4880 is nice, but is there (or will soon be) something with similar specs, but about 6 lbs or less with 15" LCD, and no thicker than maybe 1.2"? I'd be willing to make some sacrifices for this size/weight, as long as it has x700/6600 video. This is really all that is holding me back from getting the V6V now, and the physical size (wide) and chassis of the Z71v is all that stops me from getting it when its available.

If no nice laptops of this size and video card type are going to be available soon (maybe a couple months at most), then I've got to decide on 3 things..

-V6V

-Z71V (maybe I'll get used to the size and get to like the widescreen, plus the battery life is appealing)

-A last generation (400Mhz CPU, ATI9700) with 15" LCD and a nice slim maybe alloy chassis (should be a few options).

Any opinions or recommendations?

Thanks for all the input

I just got an email from Gwen at ISTNC (awesome fast, I only emailed her this afternoon), but she's saying that Yonah will be incompatible with the z71v. Asus had originally stated that it would be, but they have now retracted that statement. So no upgrading to yonah anymore.
That really annoys me... I just emailed Gwn to confirm that...
Yeah I talked to ISTNC last week and they said they were checking on Yonah compatibility. Guess I was right about the different chipset for it, as well as being dual-cored.
Well, now that I think about it, it's not that bad. Yonah will come in a year to a year and a half. If I'm expecting to purchase a new laptop in 3.5 years, I Yonah will only have been out for about two years. Not a long time... so w/e about the Yonah, makes no difference to me
post #186 of 245
Yeah, it just might end up being a deal breaker for me. I'm going off-campus next fall for 3-4 monthes so I think I'll just wait to see what yonah has to offer. That being said, I'll wait to see how good the reviews are before making up my mind. I do really hate the laptop I have now and way too much programming to be done on it next term.
Meh, if anything I'll just dump in the higher clock speed dothans that come out in the future. Unless there aren't any. There should as Yonah isnt stated to come out for about a year or so.

I believe Intel is releasing higher speed Pentium M processors in the fall. (not Yonah, but higher speed Dothan/Sonoma)

Goody!

Hmm buy a 2.0 Ghz system now and hope by 2006 you will have a 3.0 Ghz system w/o having to buy a new laptop hehe

@Okota: I live in Canada, but purchased from IST and am having it ground-shipped to Canada (Toronto) for $40USD. In total, including all the accessories and stuff, it cam out to be $2930CAD. Pretty damn good deal if I may say so myself.

Display Specs?

Hey everyone,

I might have missed it, but has there been any mention of display specs for the Z71V such as Brightness (nits), or Contrast ratio? Anyone know if the actual display being used is being used in any other laptops so as to get an idea of what one will be getting? Any and all info is appreciated!

I really love the high contrast Sony/Toshiba displays, and I think one in this notebook would make it almost perfect (in my opinion of course because I know there are those whom don't like it) However, I still would like it to have a bright evenly lit display as I could live without the glossy screen if need be, although i'm still hesitant because those screens are so nice and my eyes are #1

Thanks again!

I've emailed IST on info. I'll tell you the specs when they reply.

Hmmm $40 shipping. You sure you're not gonna get caught with brokerage fees/customs fees/taxes and so forth? A friend bought a trumpet from the US and paid very little in shipping. However, when it got shipped, he had to pay up over $300 on a $1500 trumpet at the door before they would give it to him.

Well I'm sure there is going to be some brokerage fee, but not big. There is actually no tax on computers (electrical componenents in general I think) coming into Canada... from what I've researched. So I think I'm safe from a $300 fee!
there may be no TAX on electronics but i think that he is reffering to ?DUANE? is it spelled right?
but then again USA Canada Mexico is in NAFTA...

I hope the SXGA model with the 64mb 6600 isn't too sluggish. Really would like a 4:3 screen instead of an 16:10.
