Yeah, I configured out and the price was around 1800ish. Pretty good with that spec.

Yes, with all of the optical bay battery, you must swap the battery with the cd/dvd drive.

Those dimensions seem realistic, 9.0" deep is nearly impossible with a 15.4.

ASUS has two different lines of notebooks, they have their pre configured notebooks ( W3,W5, V6 ) which are way overpriced, and then they have their " Built on ASUS " notebook line, which are barebones that are configurable.
We have yet to receive any info about the new M5N and M6N in the 915 chipset. ASUS told us yesterday that these wouldnt be released until April/ May, and they have no info to release on these new models as of yet ( disturbing )
Also, we found out yesterday from ASUS, that there will be an initial release of the Z71V ( we are due to receive our shipment mid March ) but, the following shipment will be delayed because of shortages of the WSXGA LCD's. No time frame for the delay was given.
Despite my excitement for the new Z71V notebook, I am still a loyal fan of the M6NE notebook. I am anxious to review the specs for the M6NE replacement when its released. I have a conference call today with ASUS N.A to go over the specs, when I receive them I will make sure to Post them.

so either the M:515 is a diffrent lappy or voodoo screwed up

so we cant play games which require the cd with the extra bat in unless we have an external cd-drive or a cd crack

The replacement for the M6NE notebook is going to be the " Z70V ", due to release end April ( all subject to change ). At this point, this is what we know. The Z70V will have dedicated PCI Express ATI X600 64MB graphics, support for DDR-2 memory. Appearance wise, ASUS changed the exterior color of the Z70V. Instead of the charcoal color of the M6N, the Z70V will have a lighter grey/silverish color.
This is all the info I have on the Z70V at this time.

If that is the case, Z71V baby!

Sorry I did not reply about the price of the Z71V, but I have been busy. I guess that question has been answered and I can't believe that istnc is in the forum. He was really helpful to me while deciding to go with the Z71V. Actually knew what he was talking about. Not like other sites where you feel like you know more then them about the product and believe me I'm far from very knowledgeable about Notebooks.

I haven't recieved mine yet (obviously, with the ship date in mid March), but If all works out, there is no better deal out there. The Acer is the only thing close.

BTW, can't believe how much Voodoo's are. Nice paint, but I'll give that up to save a couple grand.

i still don't get what's up with latest Asus laptops (and some others) that have all the ports on right hand side :-(
post #93 of 245
my best guess is with all of the peripherals going wireless, people wouldn't mind having ports on the right side?

I'm okay with my newly aquired m6ne, i'll wait a couple years and upgrade to a 2nd generation sonoma notebook (or the next line) which will probably be super small (to today's standards), light weight, and extra powerful. I like asus and will probably follow them into the future. The m6ne should be sufficient for a while. I'm not a super gamer or anything, just a compsci major trying to get into the industry. i've been in college for almost 8 years, on my second major, and can tell you it's nice to have a nice notebook that can help me code on the go. But the z71v looks like a nice notebook, with the screen and graphics and such....but still happy with my m6ne purchase.

By the way, there is a thread in here that talks about the z70v, there are even pictures of it. It's a silver version of the m6 and i wasn't aware of it having the new chipset. I guess they have been released in europe from what i hear. If you're a hardcore gamer, the z71v might be more attractive due to the 128mb vram, but i still like the m6 style. the z71v, imho it looks like a budget high performance deal, not what i'm looking for, i could be wrong though. I'd say go for it and check it out.....

I just got back from the ASUS Product Showcase here in Vancouver, BC and saw a Z71a...
The one very cool feature I saw was that it had a light sensor at the top of the LCD screen; if you cover the sensor, the screen begins to dim... I found that feature extremely cool. So if you're in a bright environment, the screen should adjust itself so that you can see it better.

Other than that... the Z71 series didn't look too special. It's round edges are nothing too special... but, to each his/her own.

As AuroraS mentioned, the Z71A/V comes equipped with ALS ( Ambient Light Sensor ), a very cool feature of the Z71 series. The display will actually adjust to the light present in the room.
The single largest drawback to the Z71A/V is the chassis design. The round edges plus the plastic chassis leaves alot to be desired. This in itself is a reason for the pricing. If the Z71 series had the same composition as the M6 series, nothing could touch it, but ASUS chose a more economical chassis instead.
A big plus to the Z71 series is that they run exceptionally cool. The unit comes with a CPU fan as well as a dedicated chipset fan, a major perk.

That is what I've been pondering too. The chassis design isnt the greatest, but given the feature vs price ratio, it is the best in it's class.

I agree with rick, if it was in the M6 chassis, that would rule all the way.

I also wanted to clarify something else, it has been mentioned by others to not " pre purchase " the Z71V because of upcoming price drops in processors and memory.
As I have mentioned to all that have emailed, there are no processor price drops announced by Intel. How do we know this? We are Intel Premier Solution Providers, and we are notified at least 30 days in advance of price drops.
Our business model is servers and notebooks. We purchase a tremendous amount of memory for both our servers and notebooks, neither Samsung or Infeneon have announced a price drop at this time. If a price drop were to take place, we would honor it, but as stated previously, there has been no price drop announced.
We do however fully expect a price INCREASE after the initial launch of Z71V's due to WSXGA LCD shortages. The jury is still out on this.
