As some of oyu may know my optical drive failed on me on day2 of having my laptop. Well i got the replacement in today. My original drive has a manufacturer date of Jan 06, 2005. They sent me a scratched up drive made in ocober of 2004! Now My machine is brand spanking new why would they send me what looks to be a used or refurbished old drive!? I am calling them back tomorrow, this is rediculous!

I can't believe they sent you a scratched up old drive.

I would be furious!

that seems wrong....totally wrong

I'd like to see some images of this drive. I’m not calling you a liar; I would just like to see the extent. I agree that anything less then new is completely unacceptable. Maybe they didn't see the damage, or didn't look it over, assuming that 2 more months wouldn't of mattered

-wrong wrong wrong
Not at the price of these systems
I would expect that stunt from like e machines.

That's a three month difference, depending on where they get their stock that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Where is the scratch?

Super...I had a drive issue with my 7700 and AW sent me a brand new one and all is fine and I am sure they will resolve this for you to your satisfaction...AW will not leave an owner with a problem like that

If the damage is extensive on the part replacement, please do contact us.

The manufacture's date should not matter. We use parts which we have in our stock inventory and if we were out, we would order more.

a drive is a drive man, and opticals are known for going out. my current computer has one good drive and one sorta drive. october 2004 wasn't that long ago, and if the part works no worries. i wish i'd gone with the second drive for my 7700 just because those little bastards love to go dead. oh well phase 8 and i'm not stopping for anyone. i'll order it later

Yeah, a drive is a drive and all but at a $3000 or more price tag, that drive better be brand new. His machine failed 2 days after he got his laptop... they best send him a new drive and a gift certificate to Amazon.com for his troubles...

Juan,
Your not saying Alienware uses used parts to replace defective ones on a laptop are you?
My 5500 is on the way and thats concerning.

The information is stated in the warranty:

http://www.alienware.com/sub_pages/warranty.aspx

During your warranty period, if a covered product is proven to be defective in workmanship or materials, Alienware will, at its option: (1) replace or repair the defective component; or (2) replace the product with a comparable product. Replacement parts will be new or serviceably used, comparable in function and performance to the original part or product, and warranted for the longer of fourteen days or the remainder of the warranty period. Replacement products may be refurbished, and are also warranted for the longer of fourteen days or the remainder of the warranty period. Any additional purchases or upgrades will not extend this warranty.

Yep... used parts baby. Dell does the same thing, only Dell will use used parts on your NEW machine meaning, your gonna get a machine that you paid full price for with new and used parts in it...

hey brianl, where on newegg did you see those drives?
also, outside of my drive for my 3000 dollar(at the time) computer also going out on the second day i owned it, the thing has worked for 5 years straight with no complaints. electronics either work or not generally but a failed cd-rom doesn't neccesarily dictate a future failure in hard ware.

I'm still wondering why you'd think that drive was used.

You think AW put the drive in a computer during their month plus build times, shipped it out, had it fail, had it shipped back, had it repaired, and sent it to you all in a couple months?

Although AW can use refurbished parts, meaning the part has been tested and certified to manufacturers standards, I doubt this drive made in October is used and refurbished.

The fact that the drive was scratched up, most likely, means it's refurbished. Or... they store their new drives poorly.
I can understand them using refurbished replacment parts after 30 days of ownership. But the drive was DOA on a new machine and it should be replaced with a new drive.
