Again with the raid help.

Installed xp on a 60 gig 7.2k drive.. I have a 60 gig drive 7.2 laptop drive from my old Sager 4780 that I want to use as a backup drive on my Sager 9860.

Someone told me I have to completly reformat and install xp to get the 'spare' hard drive working properly?

Do I have to install raid drivers for the 'spare' hard drive?

or do I just put the 'spare' hard drive in to the secondary spot and windows will see it?

Creating an array will require a reformat (creating the array destroys whatever partitioning you have set up). The only way around that is if you possibly have the single drive already defined as an array, in which case you *might* be able to just add a drive to the array and rebuild it (I don't know if the 9860's controller even allows this). If you already have an array defined, then Windows already has the driver loaded.

If the array *isn't* already defined, then you'll have to create one, and that will require reinstalling Windows.

I actually did this...plug it in and add a slave jumper to the secondary drive. it will NOT require reformatting. you may have to reinstall windows on the second disk, I did but the jumper pin might be enough. In fact I don't even think you have to....

But don't reformat and lose your data, no need

Dude, ya just made my day. Finally, someone gets my questions. I dont want to install raid, I just want to have another backup drive to put all my crap and stuff... Ok, heres a question for ya... 2.5 inch drives and a jumper.... I dont have a jumper for the other hard drive.. think I could 'make' one?

If your spare drive does not have Windows loaded on it that would make it easier. But if it does have windows (without the jumper) then the 9860 will try to figure out which drive you are trying to load the OS on. I have always used the jumper so can't say if it will work without a jumper.

2.5 drive jumper? Will a regular 3.5 inch drive jumper work for a 2.5? If not... Is there a way I can "make one" lol

You can always use a thin wire wrapped around the posts you're jumping... but I'd suggest contacting a computer repair place around you and getting an appropriate jumper. If your wire comes off or comes into contact with another post, there's no telling what kind of havoc that would cause.

And it definitely makes it easier since you don't *want* RAID... reading your first post it sounded like you did.

I believe that the normal jumper will work.

hi, me again, I actually used the jumper off a standard hard drive, it bent the pins a bit but works fine.
